Met up with Arry at Ides Hill / Sevenoaks and went via B-roads down to Beachy Head which was blowing 300mph winds up top.

We left after a short while due to frost bite and pneumonia. Luckily defrosting on the way back by riding through the only bit of rain to hit the South East in 10 weeks. It was big fat rain and roads were flooded as were our crotches.

Quickly developing trench-foot and trench-nut, we fired ourselves towards a bit of blue sky and stopped as steam billowed off the concrete.

Couldn't stop laughing at a ridiculous day.

Bikes are mega Thumbs Up

Local Byeways on Friday. The plain has been baked dry so it's easy to ride anywhere.

Went out for a couple of hours, about 70 miles or so.
Must get used to nodding again.

Well, it was, it was a case of playing mother goose, out with the goslings again today, over to Ellesmere, via the Raven, there and back, the nipper's friends first 100+ mile rideout, only the 3rd on her 125...

Had to work this morning so treated myself this afternoon. The Army uses the Byeways here so they are incredibly well maintained, coupled with the dry weather I can get the bike places I wouldn't normally dare.

For almost a decade it was used as a functional Forward Operating Base for troops on pre-deployment training.

This means 1000's of bored squaddies wanked in here, contaminating the place for eternity.

Cool to see nature reclaiming it, last time I was here this place was in full swing

Got a bit cocky today. Came off the better kept tracks.

Which started off ok
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49938506278_0c097b33ed_h.jpg

But got a bit sketchy. Wasn't so much it being steep but it was basically baked dry dust with gravel on top and the occasional big round flint nodule. Nothing for tyres to grip.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49939322002_42b2e49c97_h.jpg

Became easier further down when it was more dirt, less gravel and dust.

Back out of slumber, awoken to the mighty BCF by a PM so thought I might as well update what's gone on with me.

Firstly, I took the KTM somewhere nice out in the lanes to get some pictures of it:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49917191271_742a78f992_c.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49917189531_ff1ddcf323_c.jpg

Cos then it got sold. Gone, but not forgotten - some really good times on it, including Linconshire Wolds, Norfolk twice, Dorset coast, a couple of others I'm sure. 4 years was enough though, I need to own something that's a bit more.....forgiving.... of my spazmicated body these days.

Obviously Pigeon has already done our freezing cold and soaking wet trip down to Beachy Head Laughing

Bank Holiday. Took wifey out on it for the first time since I was operated on; must be a good 18 months since she's been out. Headed off into the Essex cuontryside and found a lovely little old church that's not used any more, and had a picnic in the grounds before going for a bit of a walk.

Starting to get that feeling with my GSXR Sad

I saw a bloke on one of those KTM's yesterday when I was on the Byeways. I thought I was doing good at about 25MPH, dodging potholes, he comes flying past at 40+ Laughing

Comfort, don't care about speeding, ride on most terrain, cheap enough to fix don't care about battering it, lets you enjoy the scenery. Crap enough by any measurable metric, you stop caring about measurable metrics and just ride the thing.

I think it's the motorcycle equivalent of dropping out of the rat race, moving off grid and giving Middle Finger to everyone trying to sell 200BHP that requires more electronic aids than the Space Shuttle ever did.

Church looks like a lovely setting. I have some unwanted family Colchester way so if the Essex countryside is all that pretty may venture up there.

Nah, afraid not Surprised It looks tiny compared to the older SMC. My mate is dead happy with it, he's got an Akra can + removed airbox + dynojet so it could potentially be knocking on the door of 80BHP Shocked He spent ages faffing with the suspension too, he is ridiciously anal about having his bikes (all 7 of them) set up perfectly and generally being the best they possibly can be. I was tempted by the 0% offers they had but wedding + house move = barely get any time for the bikes these days, only done 1000 miles on both combined last year, and this years tour got cancelled so probably won't beat that by too much Laughing

Agreed on the Enfield score - still the best thing I've done in my biking life I think. On paper I should absolutely hate it, but then on paper I should absolutely hate my missus but in reality I only find her mildly cretinous.

That place isn't a million miles away from Colchester - it's in Mundon, and it is very much Enfield Territory out there. Small lanes, pretty villages. The wider area is known as the Dengie Peninsula and there's a sort of circular route that gives a decent hour's riding and a decent cafe called The Cabin down in Burnham
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Latchingdon,+Chelmsford/Burnham-on-Crouch/Althorne,+Chelmsford/Dengie/Bradwell+Waterside/51.6721148,0.7025332/@51.6811663,0.734456,12z/data=!4m33!4m32!1m5!1m1!1s0x47d8dfc4c96945cf:0xf1d53fad47ea3cad!2m2!1d0.718923!2d51.6721379!1m5!1m1!1s0x47d920543b0cae29:0xc6d83497d1d5134a!2m2!1d0.814539!2d51.628347!1m5!1m1!1s0x47d920758240f567:0x3c89babc8c443611!2m2!1d0.763506!2d51.65453!1m5!1m1!1s0x47d922648f228ebd:0x25e624a9dabd8342!2m2!1d0.871624!2d51.680362!1m5!1m1!1s0x47d9191827517443:0x75e58cc1cf894ea0!2m2!1d0.8899517!2d51.7338143!1m0!3e0

There's lots of good riding to do in Essex but you do have to search it out - the roads around Finchingfield are really good when the traffic is quiet.

Back on the Byeways yesterday afternoon. Had to get from Tidworth - Devizes for something work related. Mileage on tarmac would be 40 round trip, I manged 70 over almost 3 hours Laughing . I thought I could remember routes I last did over 10 years ago in a Warrior, turns out I just got super lost.

Giving myself a half day today so may go re-explore this area.

Every single plank wobbles on this bridge, it'll take 80 ton but even on a bike it feels like it's collapsing behind you as you go over.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49945719093_b027952d6c_h.jpg

Plain is full of random little groups of buildings. Army uses them to train. These ones are actually the last place I ever did a Company attack back in '09. I got held back after we went through to play enemy for the next lot, was handed a GPMG and told I wouldn't be the one cleaning it Very Happy
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49945719628_e2e9fb55ea_h.jpg

This slope was much steeper than the photo lets on. The entire surface felt like it wanted to slide down alongside the bike and it had a really annoying series of stepped bits near the bottom that had me worrying about wrecking my sump. Ended up pretty much idling down, controlling speed on the back brake. No idea if that is the right way, I have no real off road experience I'm just making this shit up as I encounter it.

I’m going to have to go back to old school and use a camera with a card , that can then be loaded onto my laptop.
I can’t do pictures onto here using my mobile phone Evil or Very Mad

Anyhow! Today I did take the Hyosung GT250r out for a buzz.
Ipswich to Manningtree and back via the back roads.
The weather was just right and the roads were not busy.
The new exhaust is maybe a tad to loud, but that’s something to be dealt with later.

I blew the cobwebs out of my head and happy Pepperami is happy Thumbs Up

Took the R1 out for an hour yesterday evening telling myself I'd take it easy but before long I was "making progress." I just missed an unexpected WW2 fighter practice-display at Duxford. I think it was the Sea Fury I could see from a distance but by the time I got there it had disappeared. Quite a few folk on surrounding roads watching though.

It must have been 8pm as I rolled through a local village so folk were out on the pavements clapping for key workers, but I felt like I'd just won the TT. Laughing There's a single-track road on the other side of the airfield which I often take. Then it was back on the A-road towards home.

Lovely evening. Seems to be a lot more insects about this year, judging by the bug splats. Fine weather? Less traffic? I dunno.

Left the house before 0700 today. Made Milford on Sea before 0800, just a few locals exercising there and clear roads all the way. An old lady ripped in to me for where I parked the bike, apparently lots of disabled people use those (steep) steps (to a shingle beach), decided it was best to not take up that arguement and went home.

Came back via the New Forest, best avoided even pre 0900 it was really busy.
