One of my underlings needed some stuff today, said stuff was delivered to me. So with 30+ degrees outside I thought it'd be rude not to turn the 46 mile trip in too 113 miles Luckily his stuff fitted in my seat hump.
Was worth the melting heat, roads were pretty clear and I finally killed off a pair of old sliders.
However on the way home on a local bit of tarmac, 2 mile straight, perfect visibility, top speed run kind of place, a bunch of what when I first saw them (very) far off looked like cyclists in a line, slightly closer became cyclists 4 abreast.
Out with the anchors, hello 2 blown fork seals.
You can see the circlip dangling

Dragged the winter bike out sooner than planned. Managed 2 hours early yesterday, early enough there was no traffic about. Did a few laps of a little thing I call the Wilts TT
Put a grin on my face. 6 months of a litre il4 and a big single, I've got used to low down torque and power pretty much idle - redline. This 600 il4 is black and white different, much to my amusement I kept floundering out of corners because I was forgetting to dance around the gearbox. Bikes is ridiculously comfy too, it's a la-Z boy with a 16k redline.

Honestly, I never thought it would be the bike for me, but it ticks all the boxes at the moment. If your wanting a bike that can go up and down trails, ride well in single-track roads, has a bit of power and is very very smooth to ride then id say this bike is pretty much spot on. ____________________ Current: 2019 Yamaha T7 -> 2015 KTM Superduke R | 2000 Yamaha R1 Past -> 2009 KTM 990 SM -> 2005 kawasaki ZX10r -> 2000 Honda CBR 600 FY -> 2002 Honda XLV 125 Varadero

Also had a look out at the Nook Farm place, still much prefer the petrol station and the pasties myself Views are nice though, was mega busy when I was there. Lots of people seemed to be wandering off into the field up the hill.
Did Hartside, but turned off before Penrith and came back on ourselves heading towards Brampton on the mad little roads, then on to the A689 towards Alston. The amount of gravel on the single tracks was unreal as usual, expected after the rain recently I suppose.
Heard the speed camera vans were out and about so, went from Alston to Lanchester nearly entirely on single tracks, tried to find the route just now on Google Maps but too easy to lose track so gave up ____________________ KTM 990 SMT & Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM |

Played a little game today, something I've been planning for ages, called it Castle Attack, basically visit as many Castles as possible (our area has an abundance of them!).
First Witton Castle (where I should have been dying on the grounds this weekend from alcohol poisoning but unfortunately not to be )
https://i.imgur.com/hopcMvq.jpg
Next was Walworth Castle (funnily both me and Kieran worked here 10 years ago as waiters, nice to come back and stick the V's up at the place )
https://i.imgur.com/9cf03BT.jpg
3rd was Raby Castle, difficult to get close to anyway and more so today as it was an Alfa Romeo gathering, wasn't paying £15 just to get close for a shot.
https://i.imgur.com/UxhoM7R.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/3HoNrl9.jpg
4th Barnard Castle (ruin, blown to pieces by Cromwell I believe), place was heaving so were lucky to find this secluded spot for a photo.

https://i.imgur.com/FYDCsfj.jpg
Next just down the road was the little known Bowes Castle, very quiet so we sneaked the bikes up close.
https://i.imgur.com/BMo3FK4.jpg
Then a long slog up the dales to Stanhope which technically has a castle (renaissance era tarty house really).
https://i.imgur.com/h0rOTPq.jpg
Then a good chunk of the way up past Allenheads (photo in the woods) to Langley Castle near Hexham.

https://i.imgur.com/2pBTgYw.jpg
Aydon Castle ruins near Corbridge next
https://i.imgur.com/TCuFLuU.jpg
Lastly Lumley Castle near Chester Le Street, not a very photogenic location lots of trees.

https://i.imgur.com/D0Lr09D.jpg
Still loads of sites left for the future (Alnwick, Bamburgh, Richmond etc), started to rush towards the end of the day as running short of time (4 hour ride turned to 7 hours due to Kieran riding no faster than a C50 soon as it got wet up the Dales ).
Think in future I'll go solo. ____________________ Current: 55 FZS 1000S, 02 FZS 1000, 77 CG 125, 04 XR 125 Some Bike Pics...

Bit of a mission yesterday. Sort of my fault although I'm not taking all the blame.
A while back I found a place called Chappel about 50 miles up the road. It's a nice little village on the Colne river but the specific reason for going there was to see the Viaduct:
https://services-media.propertylogic.net/website/1519054450/Area_Guides/about-chappel-wakes-1.jpg
So off I trotted and eventually..... success
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50312314371_afcd8232bb_b.jpg
However, it wasn't without its challenges. Firstly, I'd plotted the route some time ago and devised that I'd do it on the Enfield, so I planned in the lower speed, single track sort of stuff because the Enfield is really at home there. The BM - yeah, less so Secondly, I didn't stop to look at the route again before I started off (otherwise I'd probably have changed it) and ended up going 10 miles out of my way in a slightly different direction, second guessing what the sat nav was going to do. Thirdly, the sat nav didn't take into account a couple of road closures that had me chasing diversion signs and THEN heading straight back to the problem area as the nav wanted to hit the waymarker not realising I wanted to move onto the next one
Also had a rather interesting experience coming through the single track stuff with a blind left hander. Moved over to the middle/right of the track for visibility and as I got visibility of things moving towards me, ducked into the left and hugged the verge, came to a stop. Yeah, Team Sky Wannabie MF's coming the other way 3 abreast, furthest right hit the brakes and had nowhere to go - just clipped my mirror and shoulder on the way through What on earth they'd all have done if there was a car coming is beyond me
110 miles ish total (about 15 of those lost). Just ticked over 5000 miles on the BM, so that's ~1550 since middle of July. Not bad. |

Decided fairly randomly to ride to Emley Moor Transmitter for sunrise on Saturday; this involved being on the road for 5am on Saturday morning with SLR, tripod etc. all strapped to the bike. It was a pretty rough ride there - rain, dark, wind, but dropping over the Pennines towards Holmfirth saw the clouds pull apart like theatre curtains revealing a fantastic orange glow on the horizon. Living on the west side of the Peaks I don't normally get to witness sunrises as they're blocked by the hills until the sun is relatively high, it's the sunsets we get, so this was quite a treat. I need to sort out the SLR photos properly, but the below is a quick 'phone photo showing me parked up taking the photos. It was pretty special and made the early start worthwhile.

Mine will get through the 500ml the sight glass takes in about 900 miles the way I'm riding. In order to keep it topped up I'm adding oil every other ride
Luckily I've got all my luggage sorted now and have ~100L of storage so that should be enough to carry my oil around with me if i go touring - I'll send my gear ahead by Fedex |
