Led a green lane ride. Usual mishaps and bloopers on the way, one person went to the wrong meeting point in the wrong county and had to meet up with us halfway round. A couple of people bailed, one with a broken bike, the other volunteered to escort him back.

The XR 600 was kick start only, and did not like restarting, rather him than me. The Triumph 800, well - stuff picking that up. Laughing

First ride of the year Very Happy

https://i.imgur.com/7JeKvzk.jpg

Did about 100 miles to Alston and back, mostly seen off road bikes not many road bikes. Roads were lovely and mostly dry, loads of salt though, bit slippery in the corners. Was nice in the sun, but on the move the wind chill was pretty bad.

too much salt & crap on the road with an awful lot of expensive plastic to break for many road bikes to be out ...

is that your DR400 ?

Yet more green laning. I managed to stay on all day, luck as much as skill, everyone else came off, some multiple times. There were one or two banks of drifted snow still, and they made for interesting obstacles on a couple of hilly bits, and the last lane of ruts - full of frozen puddles which was interesting.

Spare a thought for my mate with the DRZ, he's yet to manage a full day without retiring with a sick bike. Today it was his clutch.

Scorching 12c today so was out on the KTM around Northumberland for a change. Also was testing out my new panniers and screen extender. Seen quite a few bikes out, think today is the day us part timers have decided to pull off the covers and battery tenders.

First ride of the year. Embarassed Mainly a test run for the Sena bluetooth. Properly enjoyed having wire free music today.
Was able to hear the music and the Akra even with earplugs in. Got the wife to call me while I was out to try out
the hands free phone feature, first time I've ever been riding along whilst on the phone to somebody. It felt quite surreal.
Didn't go far, just around and about locally after first meeting my wife and her dad at the pub as they were out walking
the dog this morning.

What do you think of them, heard mixed reviews, they are just KTM 690's in a frock after all Surprised Never got on with both KTM 690 SMC's I had, the snatchy throttle did my head in, power was nice, good tank range too.

Didn't get far today, only really went to Belsay via Morpeth/B6343 and explored the back lanes a bit. Annoying amount of horse riders, cyclists, ramblers etc. about, only did about 45 miles, happy to be out on the vtwin beast, horse riders less so. Much prefer Cumbria (big shock there), but there are loads of lovely lanes to explore in Northumberland, I try to take note at work as I'm often in the sticks wishing I was on my bike instead of driving a big van.

never had a KTM .. i know that is what the engine is made by but ..
it moves and handles like the DR600 & DRZ400 i had..
i have put the power mode on soft .. which is where i suspect it will stay .. the brakes are a vast improvement .. and actually work ...
smooth as the dr`s .. but i`ve only been to indicated 70mph .. (sat-nav 65mph)

to be honest it felt like an old glove .. some snatchin when the engine is in too high a gear .. same as the dr`s
suspension is a better quality ..bit firm .. but the dr`s was too soft
fuel .. i got 66mpg .. so 100 miles for 6.9L or 190 range ..its OEM and will stay that way... also i was just ploddin around.. ..

thing is me & you are in different segments of the bikin market and i suspect your demands / requirements of the bike will be different to mine .. you would probably be better off wit the SM version ..
Largely because i ain`t goin goat trakin screaming banshee style ...
I`m more of a urban pose around machine for me wit the odd `C`class or sh`tty gravel track when its dry..

I just off road on the sm set up, not very well mind but had off road wheels for nearly 2 years now and never used them once. Best suited to tearing around country lanes as you say, I never enjoyed the 690 as much as I do the drz (with mods obviously), the drz has the perfect amount of power for it, ktm is a bit of a handful, my 990 definitely is too for the tight stuff Shocked all great fun.

where it "fell down" short for me was its on-road ability .. 60-80 mph. 0oomph .. but i do a lot more A road ridin than you .. A68 .. in particular.. nearly got wiped-out overtakin a 4x4 because he was pushin 70-80 mph .. took too long in his blind spot ..when he pulled out to overtake .. wrong application for that bike really .. hence i`ve gone for a larger cc this time ..

I went to Aberystwyth on somebody else's bike, an MV Agusta Turismo Veloce.

route there :-Wolverhampton-bridgenorth-craven arms-newtown-devils bridge-aberystwyth

on the way back went devils bridge back towards newtown and then off to knighton by presteign towards Ludlow and then off to bridgenorth can't be exact as in a group and enjoying scenery!

You won't have any bother on the 701 then, I managed to get an indicated 125mph from my first 690 and that was with the older 63bhp engine, fun times.

I had quite a pleasant ride back from the Hampshire coast on my Honda, after Loomies cafe, I picked up the B3046 for a change of pace, which was quite a nice road to ride on a trail bike, wet, gravelly, etc. Then the usual A340 through Aldermaston to pick up the B4009 at Streatley and head home the long winding way.

https://s20.postimg.org/aq3lidhm5/WP_20180403_10_54_33_Rich.jpg

Also, Honda CRF250l's last ride for the foreseeable, in the next day or so I shall take the handlebars off, in order to get it through the side passage and place it in the back garden, and then SORN it. It's too beat up to sell for a good price, but in very good working order, and I likes it. But don't want to tax and insure all my bikes, let alone MOT this one.

So will probably give it some TLC over the coming months, and get it back on the road sometime in 2019/20.

I met up with a friend and went to Wessons cafe in Horam then on to Beachy Head near Eastbourne. Top day, excellent fry up, blue sky and stunning scenery. 130 mile round trip for me and the longest ride on the gixer since it broke down spectacularly in France last year.

I might keep it afterall!

Hampton-in-Arden to look at some grass, and sheep.

Last time I took a new route was a couple of years ago when I did my A2 (under instruction) so figured it was about time, since the bikes mechanically fine and I'm used to it now, to get out and about and explore a little on unknown roads.

Nothing drastic to report, probably could have done with taking one or two corners a little better but I doubt anyone gets every road right first time round (or on repeated commutes, for that matter). Ended up missing my turning into the carpark and took the next right which, sadly, was someones steep gravel driveway. I can only hope no-one watched out their window as some poor sod attempted to turn a 200 kg bike around with so little grip I couldn't even lift my foot up on the rear brake all the while heading towards a steeper drop onto a very tight road. Got one look from a passery by as the revs rose attempting to make it up the hill and into my steep turning car park <embarrassed face.jpg>

Encountered hundred(s) of scooters on the way back (thankfully in the opposite direction) with one poor sod broke down on dual carriageway with no sign of scootay friends stopping. Passed a few bikes in the village, too. Sign your on a good route, I'd imagine.

Woke the bike up in the process too since its the first time, under my ownership, that it's hit 60 mph +. Sounded a little rusty to begin with but woke up in the end. Probably do with more high speed riding to get the confidence and stable speed up since I ended up doing 50 mph in a 60 mph zone at one point. But, beside that, didn't make any major wrong doings on roundabouts and perhaps joined a major road from a slip road a little early but all is well.

Took the Satnav, that died. Took the GoPro, that died. Couldn't be arsed to dig headphones out of pocket and reading road signs is a better habit to get into.

Bobs yer uncle, where to next?

Had a go of my mates new Triumph Speed Triple, lovely machine. Then out of jealously the KTM's battery died not long after Embarassed Hoping it's just the battery anyways.

Seemed to me like they did good business. In the summer, anyway.
Saw a report that said the owner said she wanted to get it up and running again, so maybe.
