I bought myself an old two stroke to do up as a project. It turned up yesterday in a van along with the MOT and V5.

The only problem is, the V5 has been filled in then tippexed over and the guy I bought it from hasn't signed at the bottom.

I phoned the seller who told me someone came to buy it, filled in the V5 and used the old 'I've left my wallet in the car' routine and never returned.

I blagged a partial refund out of him but what do I do about the V5? Will I get away with just writing over the tippexed bits and signing his name?

I've done all the proper checks on the bike and I'm 100% sure it's all legit but can I get done for forgery or anything if I sign on behalf of the previous owner?

Cheers - Mark

Hmmm, if you had bought the bike off the previous owner and you just couldn't get in touch with them or whatever then I'd say yeah fuck it, sign it. But because it's been bought off someone else, who isn't the person on the V5, I'd be a bit worried personally.... I'm really not sure what to suggest. Ring the DVLA maybe? *runs for cover from people throwing things at me for suggesting the DVLA might have half a clue*

EDIT: That said, if you did sign it, nobody could prove it was you who signed it...

Probably could, but what they don't know won't hurt them, I may or might not have done this before and haven't had any problems, get the sellers permission might be a safe bet on any come backs..

A friend of mine once bought a bike with a green slip only in someone else's name.

He got a written receipt etc. and took it to the office in Colton, I think it was. They just crossed the guy's name and put my friend's on. They then sent him a V5.

A V5C is a liability, not an asset. It's entirely the old keeper's responsibility to notify the SecryStateTransport of the change of keeper.

Tell the DVLA that you're the new keeper, they'll eventually send you a new V5, and will blackmail the chump who sold it to you. Win-win.

Just posted it off. I filled in the tippexed bits and got someone else to do the signature. I'll just wait and see what happens next.

Thanks all Thumbs Up

The V5C says that the current keeper "must sign" their section of it, but if it isn't signed then the DVLA will write to the current keeper to check that they've disposed of it. So it's not completely essential to sign it. The fact that a signature has appeared will save that being done.

I've had dealings with Tipp-Ex'ed V5s as well, and usually there isn't a problem with that, so you should be fine.

If someone gives me the V5 I just sign it all, sign their bit in a different style/get dad to do it. Problem solved.

Tip Ex, they do not give a rats arse.

Giggety. I guess the DVLA being shit can sometimes work in your favour Twisted Evil

So for future reference, I can confirm the DVLA accept tippexed up V5s with (allegedly) forged signatures Thumbs Up

To teh doovla, the way they see it is converting a dodgy bike with an 'interesting' history into a legal bike with a new owner who will prolly make sure it stays legal.

So that's one less case to worry about.
