I've been looking around at DAS prices, I'm 27, so no worries there.

I've found a decent looking price on a place in Wimbourne (one of the few schools that have updated websites atm) but they use XJ600 ABS models.

I've never ridden or pillioned anything with ABS, and was probably overthinking things, but got a bit worried my current braking knowhow would be redundant, or even hindering to an ABS setup.

Basically, should one avoid tests on ABS bikes, or would it be just fine and I should stop being such a nonce about it?

Thanks! And sorry for another ABS thread, I read through a few, but couldn't really find much of an answer.

What are you worried about? The brakes will work just the same in every other circumstance than the emergency stop, which will be 50 times easier to get right.

It'll be absolutely fine.

Haha, yeah, I'm probably overthinking it all, bad habit of mine Embarassed

I was basically uncertain about how ABS changes things, and if it's as you say, then yeah, I'll stop being a nonce about it Thumbs Up

as above, brake as you always would do, ABS is intended to assist you, not alter your driving style.

in theory, you have no way of actually skidding the bike in an emergency stop, but still try not to.

Is this with the school Lets Ride?

I did my DAS with them over a year ago. Used the brand new XJ6's too. The emergency stop was hilariously easy, and even in the wet I just slammed on and stopped instantly. The examiner was quite impressed with the ABS to be honest.

If you are doing it there, you'll be taught by Richard. Absolutely top guy. He is a great teacher, and is happy for a bit of a laugh too.

Oh and to make things easier, i used a naked XJ6 for mod 1, and a faired XJ6 for mod 2 (because weather took a turn for the worst).

looking around Let's Ride looks pretty reasonable.

Thanks for the reassurance guys, I'll man up and earn my pink Karma

Richard there is great, so you'll get on just fine. I often see him around with students, and he still comes and speaks to me even after all this time.

Let me know when you do pass your test, i'll be happy to go for a ride some time as we are very local Thumbs Up

I'd heard a suggestion that some examiners don't want you to trigger the ABS because it's a "controlled" stop not an "emergency" one, which sounds ridiculous and probably is.

Worth asking the training school, but I imagine that the answer will be "What twat told you that bollocks?" Wink

I imagine he'll be doing his test at the same place i did mine. They didn't seem to mind at all, and were just impressed at how quickly it came to a stop.

I'll be at Poole for the test I assume, just up the road from me also!

It'll be nice to go on the A350 with a better bike though, WOT on the CBR gave me a smile, but it still won't compare.

I'm not overly worried about the 'controlled' stop, I've managed some pretty decent real life stops on the cbr, with it's crappy irc tyre and cheap front brakes, if they do fail me for activating it, it'll only be a few quid really.

Got some healing to do first, but getting on the case! my CBT runs out in September Thumbs Up

Yea i did mine in Poole, and they were fine with it. Richard will probably take you down the Quay on one of your lessons too, especially if it's a nice day, just for a drink and a chat about what you need to do.

You have no reason to worry about the ABS dude, it takes ALL the worry out of the emergency stop. Just slam the anchors on as hard as you like and you will stop almost instantly with no drama what-so-ever bar a slight pulse of the brake lever.

ABS has been a revelation on my CBR6f, cant understand how i ever lived without it, will most probably not go back to a non ABS bike when it comes to trading up.
