I've been trying to learn about these fancy moving pictures for a while now and threw this video together of my mate driving his car at the Evo Triangle in North Wales:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDv4gFPsT2w

I already have a similar bike video planned so expect that in general bike vids sometime in April/May Very Happy

It's very nicely shot, but is let down (IMHO) by the fact that nothing really of any interest happens in it!
There's nothing there that makes me go 'wow, I want to watch that again'. Maybe finding a more competent driver might make it a bit more exciting.

Well put together, but too much in the way of 'form over function' makes it a bit vanilla for my taste.

Thumbs Up

Fantastic quality man. Really well shot. Not enough drifting for a cage vid but I guess you can't have it all Wink

What camera did you use for it?

Yup I liked that a lot. I can imagine how much time it takes to put the shots together.

You could hire yourself out to yuppies who want their own topgear experience.

You could probably make a fair bit of cash doing it as well.

Thumbs Up

Nice one. I think it was entertaining enough, you don't want to attract too much attention from the rozzers when your plate is on display like that. Lovely Scooby as well Very Happy

Really good, really like that!

What camera and editing software did you use for that?

Also, how did you manage to get the shots at ~1.57 to be so smooth? Whenever I've tried shooting something from a car it just looks like Im driving on crazy paving!

Also, the camera inside the car, how is that mounted? Any pictures of the mount?

Also! What camera is it that is attached to the front of the car?

Sorry for all the questions Smile

I thought the video itself was good but agree about getting a more exciting driver next time. It looks like he kangaroo's the car out of the junction like a learner at 1.00 and he doesn't do much of interest.

The car was spinning on gravel then obviously gained traction as he went on the tarmac Razz

Nice and well shot.

I think the car looked bland in much of the lighting/background. Would have been better if you could have found a different colour car.

WRX belongs OFF ROAD. When I saw the beginning I hoped for some loose-surface driving, maybe with a bit of slow-motion.

Wow thanks for all the compliments! Honestly this was all shot in less than four hours and was mainly for testing different techniques for a uni project I'll be shooting in March about motorbikes. I'll try and answer the main questions/points:

There's nothing there that makes me go 'wow, I want to watch that again'. Maybe finding a more competent driver might make it a bit more exciting.

Very true, I considered maybe having a final shot of him driving up to Llyn Brenig to make it look like he'd been driving to the lake but I wanted to finish on the shot that I actually finished on so left it out. It probably would have added a bit of purpose to the video though.

The driving was as lairy as we'd like to get on public roads without taking plates off but I have some other mates who are less scared to crash so might film them at some point Wink

I know that road fairly well so had some ideas of shots before I got there. It was mainly a case of driving down the road and seeing what looked good, jumping out and getting a few drive by's.

Do you want a video doing? Cheap rates for BCF Wink Wink

Camera questions

Shot mainly on a Canon 5Dmk2. The wheelspin and the interior shots were done on a Canon 550D and the front bumper shot was done on a GoPro HD Hero 2 - all edited in Premiere Pro.

The moving shots were done with me in the back of my Dad's truck:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/truck_zps2a45cb81.jpg

(Hi-viz for the lulz Laughing )

I tried my best to keep the camera steady but obviously that was quite difficult especially as I was trying not to fall out! We were only going about 40mph absolute maximum but even so it was a bumpy ride, especially in the back of a truck with stiff suspension. To combat some of the bumpiness I used the warp stabiliser tool in Premiere to smooth it out a bit. True you lose a tiny but of resolution but if it's only going up on youtube anyway then that's no biggie.

The shots inside the car were done with a fisheye lens on the camera. I sat in the back seats and braced my arms to either side of the front seats which gave me a reasonable anchor point for a bit of smooth footage. I used the warp stabiliser again but didn't need to have such aggressive settings as I was able to brace much easier than in the back of the truck.

Just drag and drop to the upload bit. The video has to be in a HD resolution already though - 1280x720 at least. This video was shot in 1920x1080 but was exported at 1920x818 for a 2.35:1 cinemascope format. Not sure I really liked shooting with that format in mind though so will probably stick to 1920x1080 for future videos.

Thanks again for the compliments. My sister had her hen party which my missus went to so I only really had the idea to shoot the video a few days beforehand as I had no other plans for a weekend at home in North Wales. I'd love to shoot some proper drifting or some off road stuff and could probably do it with some inside local knowledge of fire roads in the area so watch this space!

I'm pretty chuffed that the video has had almost 300 views in one day as it's looking to be one of the more popular videos on my channel which isn't bad for a test video Laughing Hopefully the motorbike video I have planned will turn out better as I have an actual story planned and some similar locations in mind to shoot in so I'll be airing that sometime in April/May as the uni deadline is the end of April Thumbs Up

Nice video. I think I recognise some of the roads from when me and Salty came to Wales, and you showed us what a ZRX1100R can do. It seemed at the time that even the police helicopter was curious.

Yeah I took you guys on the roads in the video. Maybe we should do it again, I wouldn't mind some shots from a helicopter Laughing

Fooking sweet for a tester flick.

The only thing I could say was the pan was a little jittery - probably more down to what tripod you were using though!

Hell of a bit of work towards a showreel - you'l go far (what you doing at uni?)

Cheers Smile

I'm using a crappy £50 Velbon tripod, I would LOVE a proper video tripod with a fluid head for smoother pans but I can't afford it or justify it at the moment Crying or Very sad As it stands I'm just trying to tighten the tripod enough to have a bit of resistance for a pan but not so much that it won't turn. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I'm doing a BSc in Professional Broadcast Techniques. I'm trying to build up a bit of a video portfolio over this year as it'll be my last chance to commit this much time to making videos while my student loans just about cover my rent then hopefully pick up some paid commissions when I leave. I already have some in the pipeline but not enough to make a living off!

I'm hoping the bike video that I have planned will be much better than this in terms of story and content and I seem to learn a lot every time I go out and do a new video so I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
