Hi

I signed me a contract at my gym for 12 months and I'm roughly 6 months in.

In that time it's gone from a very quiet gym to a very busy one, not good given the small size of it.

It's next to impossible to have use of any of the weights / benches anywhen between 5 and 9 at night. It closes at 10.

Is there any way I can get out early?

I was thinking of telling them I'm moving away from the area.

What gym is it? National chain or local independent?

It's a local independant, not a big chain.

Paddy, I was with Virgin Active and my contract switched to a 1 month rolling contract after my 12 months had ended. I didn't want the gym any more so I cancelled direct debit 3 months ago but didn't notify them and they are now demanding 3 months membership even though for two of those months they had suspended my membership!

So, they are providing a materially worse service now than when you agreed on the contract?

Hint, hint.

Not fit for purpose?

You could always get thrown out for something. Touching yourself while watching the ladies keeping fit, or touching them.

Read the contract, at some gyms you can cancel after a period of 6 months. Some large gyms such as fitness first will not hesitate to pass your details on to debt collectors if you decide to stop paying them.

As the Borg said, the service you are receiving is poor...

This is how I got out of mine. There was a mistake in the Direct Debit (they didn't take it) one month and next thing is I get a letter from one of those debt recovery places. No warning or asking nicely at all. I just sent a letter cancelling the membership and made sure direct debit cancelled as well. With direct debit it's their responsibility to take it (as opposed to the old fashioned Standing Order for example).

Why on earth are you giving your real details to gyms and paying by DD? Cash is king.

You don't like it you can simply leave.

Gyms esp the big chains are pretty much criminal filth /Hetzer

Its been a while but there have been multiple instances of gyms NEVER letting you leave big chains not small ones.

I.e. you sign for 12 months, they put in an illegal clause stating if they don't hear from you about cancelling you automatically get enrolled for another 24 months.

They will happily lose your letter of cancellation even if you hand them over the desk.
