Hey Beatnck.
I think it's just dependant on the person..
My grandparents gave up smoking ~14 years ago and haven't touched a fag since, not even the slightest craving. My parents gave up smoking ~10 years ago, maybe a bit more, and even now my Mother will occasionally say "Hmm, a cigarette would be nice after that meal" or something along those lines.
So, some people get craving randomly for ages and ages, some just don't at all, the most important thing? Never ever put a cigarette in or near your mouth ever again and avoid smokers if you can, it's not worth starting again.
Personally? I have never smoked in my life, not a single drag on a cigarette, nothing. Everyone I have ever met whom are smokers have told me that that's fantastic and that, quite simply, they regret starting smoking, I should never start and that they wish they could give up. If you've given up, stay that way.
To put it in perspective, when my parents gave up smoking it was because Lambert & Butlers had just reached £2.00 a packet and they considered that bonkers, bloody £8 a packet in some shops now! !
How people smoke at all is beyond me, but now with the prices being what they are I doubly can't believe people smoke, give up guys! .
Cheers! . ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

Its been just over 2 years since i last smoked, it gets easier i have moments that i think that would be nice, but thats the addicted brain speaking, the pros for not smoking again out weigh the cons,
I had a truely awful time giving up, i took champix the side effects i endured from these pills was something else, for that reason i could never smoke again,
In moments of weakness you need to find your own reason not to start again, when i was giving up, i would set goals of when i can have a smoke, then i would get to the set time/day and think made it this far will just move it to another time.
bottom line yeah it get easier. |

I gave up nearly 7 years ago, but every now and then do smoke from time to time - about 4 weekends a year I'd say. Last time was when I went to Amsterdam for a long weekend in October. It is horrible really, and that reminder of how horrible it is makes me remember why I don't smoke.
The trick is realising that you are in control, not the cigarettes.

I don't regret smoking, that experience has made me better informed and able to share my experiences with those in similar situations to help them. Better to talk from experience rather than regurgitating crap you have no real idea about.

I occasionally smoke now whilst out on the piss (rare) or the occasional doob. I like the odd doob, so fuck you cigarettes.

I stopped about three and a bit years ago, still get the odd craving but nothing like as bad as it was. Oddly enough, I have the occasional dream where I find myself still smoking and in it, I'm really angry at myself for starting again, then I wake up and its fine.
Don't necessarily agree with young Paulington up there, you shouldn't be worried about being round other smokers, its just another part of kicking the habit, you'll find yourself around folk smoking whether you like it or not. Personally, I still like the smell of a smoking cigarette, although ashtrays? Not so much so.
A couple of things I find a bit annoying are born-again evangelical non-smokers looking down their noses in disgust at those who still smoke (my dad went down that road) and people who've never started giving advice to others who wish to stop.
My point is, for me anyway, the cravings fade with time. Even after a meal, when I most enjoyed a fag, I don't have any thoughts about it any more. For me that was my worst trigger. (That and leaving somewhere I couldn't smoke.)

There's only one situation that makes me want to smoke again and that's being at a festival. I find myself with nothing to do at the times when I want to be listening to the music but not necessarily dancing/jumping about with the crowd. A ciggy/spliff at the side was always a little welcome break... but now I have no ciggy/spliff I just kinda stand at the side looking lost
I did try one again after a year without and it was 'orrible though, so Iwas kinda in agreement with that statement, but obviously doesn't work for all.
I know quite a few people having success with electronic cigarettes - a couple of them have got down to 0% nicotine which shows it really is just down to mental habit rather than physical addiction at a certain point. ____________________ What would you do in life, if you knew you could not fail?

Of course, you just have to view in the right way.
You quit over a year ago, but I'll wager you had 15-20+ years of smoking down before that? And like any of us you'll have had a smoke when stressed/bored/annoyed/thinking etc etc. That amount of positive reinforcement is going to install some hard wiring in the neural networks that won't disappear - I'll bet pavlovs dogs still salivated 5 years later even if they hadn't heard a bell since.
Think of it like this - the old smoking pattern laid solid copper wire, since you quit you upgraded to fibre optics, but as with any circuit, sometimes a short or electrical gremlin could send a voltage spike back down that old copper wiring, triggering the same responses - so you think you are craving a smoke again, when really, it's just lame ass brain chemistry fooling itself.
You know in your right mind you don't really want one, so I'd do something that makes you remember why - go training or something.
I quit about a year ago as well but still on the very odd occassion have a couple when out on the pop. Last weekend being a good example, I scavved 3 fags off the bro-in-law, didn't enjoy the first one at all, or any of the others actually - but still smoked then completely, thats why as Ariel said you really don't want to break formation on that score as the old pattern of "I don't even enjoy this but I'm not going to put out a half smoked fag" kicks right back in. I'm good now in that I'm able to go without thereon without even thinking about it. Going boxing certianly helps as a motivator as well, as there's no room for being out of breath in that game at all.
Just remember, cravings last for 5 minutes. Then they fuck right off back where they belong. Stay strong!

Thanks guys .
Having given it some thought it is fairly obvious to me now..
You are right about exercise - 2 weeks after i quit i started at a local self-defense club. Just for the cardio work out really, and it nearly killed me
A year on and i'm much fitter than i was, the problem is i haven't been there for a few weeks because i cracked some ribs. 4 weeks of little exercise is driving me nuts, i'm forgetting what it feels like to be out of breath and my mind is fucking with me.
Plus a bit of extra stress at home and BANG! And to top it off i just found my eldest boys baccy stash in the shed..
I'm not going to give in to it, i know me - I couldnt stop at one. Plus i rreckon if i did have one i would probably have a massive head rush and puke.

So injury + no training + stress at home, with no subsitute for the hardcoded "have a smoke" response?
No wonder...

Joints are crap, they barely even work
I've smoked for like 6 years and spliffs still make me throw up after about 3 of them, tobacco is just cancer
I was smoking with the girl i'm seeing the other day and she was like I don't normally like smoking as it just makes me feel sick but this doesn't!!!
Yeah, tobacco |
So smoke blunts then? Or just roll up weed in papers?

Breathe all the way in as far as you can, then all the way out as far as you can.
Good to be able to do that eh?
Remember, the first fag does nothing for you other than make you feel slightly ill after about 10 minutes. The second one immediately removes that slightly ill feeling so you feel better for it BUT it only takes you back to how you were before you'd had the first one.
Don't be decieved. You don't and never did feel better for smoking a fag, they just temporarily removed the symptoms of the nicotine withdrawal the previous one caused.
If you haven't already done so, Allen Carrs Easyway book is quite short and cheap and explains the above. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
