Hello,

I haven't posted here in ages, Anyway,

My Brother in law has a 1997 Kawasaki ZX6R. He is willing to sell it to me because he has a child now.

Now what I want to know is how much should I be paying? I have looked on eBay but still no solid price. I know the bike very well and it is mint.

22k miles roughly.
Used about 5 times in the last 3 years.
FSH.
Willing to put it through MOT.
New Michelin Tyres and had about 25 miles on them both.
Also has a really nice sounding custom exhaust his old colleagues made for him.
Wheels were freshly sprayed green from purple when he got it.
Old exhaust is also included.
Always garaged with all owners as he knew them.

Any ideas everyone?

Thanks for any replies, It's appreciated.

It's your brother in law - if you like him and want to help him out £1500 would be a reasonably fair deal for you both, if you don't or your family doesn't like to stiff each other when they sell each other stuff then £900.
A lot depends upon your family's make up. Sometimes it can be a proper headache dealing with family members, from non payments to bad feelings.
The bike should get £1200 all day long on the open market, so long as it doesn't require too much spending on it after the long layup.
Only you know your family and whether someone's going to feel hard done by at the end of the deal or if either party actually cares.

Thanks for your reply mate, He is a Mechanic himself. So any work it may need for an MOT he would do. Which I doubt it would.

I don't want to give him pennies for it as it's a lovely bike. But I obviously want it fairly cheap.

Thanks.

Have you not had tentative discussions with him about it? May be the best way to find out what he wants for it. If he's in the trade he should have a pretty good idea of it's market value and what he's willing to let it go for to you.

Yes, I spoke to him about it tonight.

Around the £1400 mark.

Thanks.

Personally I'd say closer to £1,000 for a '97. If its in particularly good condition, £1200 would be reasonable. I've seen them go for around this on eBay in all sorts of conditions.

Yeah, that's way overpriced for a '97. What's that, an F2 model?

I sold my J2 for £1500 in not bad condition (2002) and got it by trading it for an £800 KTM400 EGS.

I'd say £750 if it's good. A grand will buy you a G1 or G2. ('98-2000)

I've even got a friend who paid £750 for a G2 last year, although it needed a bit of MOT work, it was in good condition.

£1000-1200 is a fair price for that.

I got my 1997 F3 for £1000. Frankly, they're getting on a bit now and i wouldn't really pay anymore than £1300. If you are going to spend that kind of money then you can get a much newer Ninja for that.

97 is pretty old. It would be a case of listing it for £1400 and accepting £1200 if anybody will give you that much. Properly mint (no damage to panels) might be worth £1200. Otherwise, £1000-1100.

£950 - £1100 it sounds like it is in decent condition and 22k is feck all miles. For £1400 - £1500 it would have to be in bloody good nick as a closer to 2000 model in decent condition could be had for that money.

I saw almost that exact bike in a dealers (a 98) for £1500 when I was looking. So I'd drop a few hundred for private so around £1200 I reckon.
I got my K3 in sig for £2100 and that had on 11k on the clock (awaits BCF informing me I got done Wink), so I'd want him to drop it or keep looking.

I actually sold my G2 just before Xmas and got £1,000 for it with a number of issues that needed sorting, and it was a 45k miler with some cosmetic issues.

My F2 sold for £1200 back in the day - 33k miler with new suspension, replacement engine (which had done 12k by the time I sold it) and stainless steel race system with titanium can. It wasn't fully trick, but it was well fettled.

I'd only pay £1000 for a F model ZX6, considering that £50-£100 notes more will get you a better bike in the G/J models.

I sold my J1 for £1250 3 years ago. With the slight inflation in used bike prices during that time I'd expect around £900-1000 mark.

Thanks for all the great responses! I will show him this tonight.

I think he is rather adamant on the price, Which I don't blame him because he wan'ts a good price. But if it's worth a lot less I will look elsewhere.

Also I prefer this shape. I really don't like the newer one with the two circles at the rear for brake lights. Think that's the G2?

Thanks.

£1450. He does not want to budge on the price. May possibly get it for £1400. Will look at it in the next few weeks to see what I think. Haven't seen it in a few months.

What's the difference between the J2 and that noted above?

Thanks.

I'd say stuff it for 1450

J2 compared to a 97 (whatever that is) will be more powerful, lighter, better handling, arguably better looking, 4-5 years newer. Lots of similarities in terms of design but overall a better bike.

He's not doing you any favours with that price. If he's family, you should both take a bit of a hit, not just you.

Better looking to some. I don't like it.

I will have a look about and search some more. It was either that or the Suzuki GSXR 1998? But I like that I know the History of this bike. Hasn't be thrashed.

Thanks.

He's expecting you to pay top end prices for that bike. However good he will struggle to sell it at that price on the open market. To sell to family I would expect him to drop the price quite a bit.

To the forum users who wanted to know the model? Not sure if this would help. But here is a link to a bike which is the one he has.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KAWASAKI-ZX600R-/221191495339?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item33800a5eab

Thanks.
