Hey! As I'll be 19 in July I will be trying to get my A2 license ASAP so I have a few questions.

I want to have a go at getting it without any lessons. By then I will have been riding a 125 for about 7 months (so far I have been doing around 100 miles a week so should have around 3k miles under my belt in and around London and also around the south coast). I'm fairly happy I will be able to do mod 1 without too much difficulty. Mod 2 I think will be harder but I just need to practice and practice again my road riding and observations, manoeuvres and so on. Which do you guys think is harder?

Also, what would be the best way going about it? My mate has a CBF500 and we are soon going to start working on his CB-1 so if I asked I could probably do it on one of them. Should I just buy restrictor kit + headed paper off eBay and then get it insured for the test days? Can anyone recommend any short term insurers that would insure a learner on a 500 for a decent price?

I've read the tips on passing without lessons but has anyone else got any advice? I know I will need to practice riding a bigger bike before I jump on and try my mod 1. I will probably take some cones down to a patch of tarmac and try it out. How hard is it transitioning from a 125 to a medium sized bike? Obviously main points to look out for are be gentle with the clutch and the disc brakes (CG has drum brakes, what a joke). Anything else?

Thanks guys!

One thing to be aware of is this:

moaning faced twatards at the DSA wrote:
You can use machines not on [the A2 list] or machines that have been restricted to meet the rules to be used if you give certified proof of compliance or restriction to the examiner.

This must be a certificate or on headed paper from an official source such as a main dealer, official importer or recognised specialist in restricting vehicles.

Dyno certificates alone are not acceptable.

I put in a FOI (of course) and they replied that they don't know what constitutes a "certificate" or how that differs from "headed paper", nor do they know who is "official", nor did they "recognise" any specialists (at that time). So, much as you'd expect.

Do yourself a favour and call or just drop in to your local test centre and ask the chap who will be doing your test what he expects to see. Ultimately, nobody else's opinion will matter.

As to the actual legality, I'd be surprised if a CBF500 actually tested at more than 35kW, or enough more to matter, so you're really just looking for a convincing bit of paper.

Sorry, no idea about insurers. eBike do monthly policies, but will not insure learners on higher classes of bike (I asked them about this for a chum, they didn't want my money).

If you're going to practice on a "private road", I'd recommend that you try to make it as private as possible. Not a car park. I'd actually suggest that you're better off sneaking round a barrier somewhere and getting done for trespass than for riding otherwise than in accordance. They're both criminal offences, but in the long term, insurers will only care about the latter.

Moving from a 125 to a 500 is a piece of pie, you'll love it. There's nothing to worry about, except for a little more weight that you won't notice once you've got your feet up. Everything else is easier.

Yeah it seems quite ridiculous to me that after that farce with A2 categories that were imaginary and insurers invalidating if you said you had a full license since you passed your test, that they still haven't written some concise or clear-cut regulation.

Cheers for the advice!
