Linkish

Yes, it's that time again where we get to see the winners and losers.

Spoiler: it's all losers.

Trail/Enduro got a little bounce, but everything else is down compared to last January, including the Adventure Sports and 125 sectors that have been propping up the numbers. And not a little bit, another 14% down on a record low 2012.

Maybe it's down on volume, but up on value?

Top selling "Adventure Sport" was the Pulse Adrenaline 125 (everyone waiting for the new GS?). Most of the top sellers per category are 125s. Piaggio and Lexmoto outsold KTM, Kawasaki, Peugeot, Harley-Davidson and BMW.

Suzuki are a no-show yet again. They're nudging one new bike sale per dealer per month. I'm still predicting a "debt restructure" or similar crisis management at Suzuki UK before spring.

The high note is Triumph, who are moving a good number of decent margin bikes. A British success story? Shocked Thumbs UpVery HappyThumbs Up

What's the overall 2012 units in a) UK b) Europe?

Just wondering how big the market is, as I know that just over 450,000 units were shipped in the USA, though I don't know if that figure includes scooter, but I'll assume that it does.

I presume that the European (EU/EEC) market is significantly larger with there being over 30m bikers.

EDIT - It's massively larger with around 1.5m units. With the industry contributing over €34bn per year.

Sorry, I forgot to reply (and nod in agreement).

https://www.acem.eu/index.php/market-figures

Ze Germans all buy BMWs, we buy a few Triumphs and other bikes, every other bugger in Europe is buying scooters though. No wonder so many UK bikes are being exported, they're not buying them new.

Except they're not. Sales across Europe are 18.5% down year-on-year in January 2013. And 2012's sales were half of the 2007 peak.

So I guess the Brussels bureaucrats are in orgasms over that knowing their measures are killing off bikes and so everyone is safer.

...except when I was in Paris last month it looked like everyone was riding scooters, those Piaggio 3 wheelers everywhere and a few bigger bikes (Goldwiings parked up as commuters Shocked). Go figure.

I thought that when I was in Paris. I was in Barcelona a few weeks ago and it was packed with proper motorcycles.

I guess it's all about the used market.

No doubt those who own bikes but rarely use them will be selling them off to release capital.Which helps get more enthusiastic bikers on the road.

I wonder if it will take long for the lack of a decent amount of new sales of larger bikes to start to affect the second hand market for prices and push them up, or is the lack of money out there going to force second hand prices down.

Is it just me or nearly all used bikes these days over priced?

I can't find anything at a decent price.

My GPZ500s was bought for £650 in 2008 taxed and tested, in good order.

I bought a ZXR750 that had admittedly slid down the road for £380 but it was taxed, tested and flew through it's next mot.

I bought a great condition ZX9R for £1500 again with tax and test and a recent major service.

I don't see any bargains like this around anymore.

Additionally all of the more modern bikes I like came out in 2008 - Tiger 800, F800GS, 990 SMT, Versys, F650GS, Dorsoduro etc.. meaning there's precious few for sale, they're too new to be cheap.

I really hope the new market picks up otherwise the used market is going to get even worse.

I didn't think the modified 675 engine would work particularly well in that but had a ride on a friends and its a lovely light bike with good power. Makes mine seem like the Queen Mary, lol.

Indeed, and Honda are rampaging ahead of everyone else in unit sales. I'm not sure how much profit they're making per bike, but they're certainly doing a decent job of shifting stock.

these figures seem to show that some chinese bikes are now becoming more popular. obviously their relative cheapness could be argued as a factor but then price alone can,t be the only reason for the increase in sales.
