Hello, I'm on a restricted licence, 33bhp, and I am looking for an enduro bike, I had my eye on a wr250f for ages but after seeing the maintenance decided it wasn't for me and am looking for a two stroke. It will be a toy really, green laning occasionally and then playing at enduros if I ever get round to getting a racing licence and joining a club. I am looking for a KTM EXC200, Gas Gas EC200, KDX220/200 etc. I would go for a 125 but I'd imagine a racing 125, if it's anything like my mates old tuned to hell DT will have all it's power after 8000rpm, I don't think I'm skilled enough of a rider to get the most out of it, so a 200 may let me lug it about more.
The thing is most 2T 200cc bikes come in at about 36-40bhp, how do I lose a few horses? I was thinking about just playing with the throttle stop so I can never be at full throttle and thus never full power?
Any advice will be greatly recieved. Thanks in advance.

Remember there's a power to weight ratio restriction as well as the 33bhp limit.

I am aware of the power to weight ratio as well, but I read somewhere that a derestricted honda nsr 125 still doesn't meet the bill and nor does a restricted DRZ400, even that is too light to meet the restriction. I would probably get away with it as standard as I won't be using it all the time but I'm too scared about getting caught and then having it dynoed or something and getting points on the only thing I care about. I could just buy it, lose the power and then carry a bag of cement round with me. I am tempted to just wait a year for the restriction to end but I have only gone 3 months bikeless and the itch is back already.

A few things concern me, you say the following;

I had my eye on a wr250f for ages but after seeing the maintenance decided it wasn't for me and am looking for a two stroke.. I am looking for a KTM EXC200, Gas Gas EC200, KDX220/200 etc

If you are meaning that your concerned about maintenance of a 4 stroke because maintenance of the engine is alot more involved then yes id agree with u to look at 2 stroke, however, these bikes are still high in terms of maintenance and needing constant attention especially if ur looking at ktm/gas gas enduro bikes, but they are relatively cheap and simple to work on..

id look at perhaps japanese if u wanna be less concerned about maintenance.

A newish KTM200 could weigh under 95kg - I believe that would give you around 20hp legally on the power to weight rules.
Of course, the new licensing rules mean those in power are even less likely to know what's going on.

My KTM 200 actually had a lot bigger 'powerbandy' feel than the 144 I had and certainly than similar 125s it seems.
However, 'your mileage may vary' - different bikes may be set up differently.
It was great fun when it was all 'working', but wheelied me into undergrowth more than once towards the end of an enduro when I was tired.
Competition enduro bikes are generally setup for flat usable power - I'd say a 250cc 2 stroke tends to be a lot 'flatter' than 450 4 strokes for instance!

The KDX200/220 are going to be a good bit less zesty than the competition bikes. The CRM250 is also worth considering - a lit bit more zip than the Kawasakis, but is a tame pussy cat compared to the snarling cheetah of the competition bikes.

I was looking for an XR250 for ages to fit the bill, but after having a go on my bosses '86 YZ125 with a big bore kit and racing exhaust I knew that a two stroke was what I wanted, the rmz250 was a good laugh to play on but the YZ just made me want to keep riding until the fuel was gone.
I am now thinking after research that a KDX is probably better for me, as the BHP falls on the 33BHP limit I believe, but obviously is too light, I did look at a crm250, and a few other enduro bikes but after running an insurance quote through they came out at around 600 pounds and a ktm200 about 400 pounds and roughly cost about the same.
Whatever bike I get will end up getting modified so I am thinking that it might be better to get a bike closer to what I want to begin with, seeing as I was going to get a wr250f then move to the EXC200 afterwards I have decided to skip the four stroke step and go straight to the bike I dream of anyway.
