This Sunday I'm off up to that there London to do a Jack the Ripper walk with metal comedian Andrew O'Neill. The plan is to go up early and bum about for a few hours before heading to Whitchapel tube station for 7.30.

We are planning on driving as far as possible then parking up and getting the tube the rest of the way as I figure it will be cheaper. We are coming from Southampton/Pompey so we will be heading up the M3.

So the question is: where would be a good place to leave the car? the cheaper the better but somewhere safe. it also needs to be fairly close to the tube obviously.

I was thinking Twickenham or Richmond or is there some place better.

Thanks in advance.

Si

to the concept of parking near a tube station in London's outskirts - hahahhahahahahahahaha

The reason my wife let me buy a bike was to get round the £20+ per day parking costs of Uxbridge

everywhere was permit only or very expensive.

it could however differ in the area you're looking at, is train an option?

When I worked in Uxbridge, if we wanted to go into London on a weekend we used to get the train from Maidenhead (our local station) as it could be done on an all zones travel card for £13.

I'm lead to believe that rail links into London from the south are meant to be good but I'm unaware of the price that it may be.

When I worked in uxbridge the main multi-storey was only about £7. A bit further round and you get to edgware, similar prices and slightly quicker in to town - the long stay is accessed through the sainsburys/shopping centre car park.

Hmm, return train from Southampton to Waterloo is going to be at least £35 each.

What about parking in London itself? I really have no idea about the costs.

Street parking was free and unregulated where I used to live in Ealing. It was 10 minutes or so from Ealing Broadway though, and I think since I moved away people have cottonned on and it fills up a lot more than it ever used to.

Not all of Ealing is free and uncontrolled. I lived on the North side; Mount Avenue, Pitshanger sort of area.

It's Sunday, most of the single yellows will be free parking and there's no congestion charge.

Jury's Inn, Heathrow. It's right next to Hatton Cross tube station, and if you buy a coffee (couple of quid) and wave the receipt at reception they'll validate your parking card, saving you from paying their daily rate. Thumbs Up
