Was just curious about this...

I've got a fairly new chain on my bike, but the sprockets need replacing - however I have found a chain/sprocket kit on ebay and was wondering if I would be able to remove the chain on the bike just now and preserve it some way so that it could be used in future years?

Would soaking it in diesel or oil for prolonged periods of time cause damage to the links?

If you mean to keep it to one side for a few months until your replacement set wears out then yes.

Lube it up and wrap in cellophane. Should be fine for a good few months if its in your sock drawer Very Happy

Depends on how crusty the socks are. Laughing

But yes, lube it up, pack it into a polythene bag and put it somewhere dry.

Be aware though that if you have been running said chain with worn sprockets then the chain will also have worn accordingly. If you fit it to new sprockets they will wear much more quickly.

Keep it as an emergency, but you will do much better IMO to fit new c&s and look after them properly. I know people who are on the same c&s after 20000 miles and they aren't gentle with the throttle.
