The side stand switch probably makes the circuit not break it.. cutting the wire has completely broke the circuit all together...

Bridge the wires together

Does it stall when :
Putting it into gear? (If so then does the bike try and lurch forward?)
or
When you're letting the clutch out? (does it attempt to move? brakes aren't seized are they?)

Will it freewheel okay?
Can you put it into gear (2nd or 3rd) and push it with the clutch in and out?

You may find that there are three wires and so it may be a combination of them, trial and error until it works.

Try both (just hoping to rule out a gearbox problem)

A bodge would be to take the clutch switch out too - so it thinks the clutch is always pulled in.

Have a look at the wiring diagram, see if that helps

https://er5.atw.hu/letoltesek/Kawasaki_ER5_C5_2004_Service_Manual_ENG.pdf

It is near the end, section 15.

Side stand switch cuts the engine as soon as you put it in gear. If it's still running before you let out the clutch, it's not the side stand switch.

The clutch switch is there to allow you to start your engine with the clutch pulled in. Once the engine is running it performs no useful purpose.

I therefore conclude it is something mechanical/operator error etc.

Elaborate?

Is it sticking on and not returning to the release position?
or do you mean pushing the brake pedal it moves but doesn't actually grip?

The latter is just a case of needing adjusted.

If it's sticking, you'll need to take the back wheel off and take out the brake mechanism inside of the wheel and knock the "brake cam" out, then give it a clean and lube up with some grease

I was gonna suggest pulling on the switch to replicate the stand being taken off to see if the switch had just jammed like mine did the other week.

If the rear brake has seized, try simply pushing on the pivot arm (No.2 on iMark's diagram) in a similar way to how your brake release spring should, but with more force to see if that frees it.
Won't be a fix, but at least then you can use the bike...just minus a rear brake Razz Thumbs Up
