i am currently in the process of replacing my piston(it had a little finger sized hole in the top) and have decided that maybe its time to fix some of the other little problems with the bike but i don't have all that much knowledge of bikes (this is my first). so sometimes when i try to go from 2-3 or 3-2 i end up in neutral, i have no idea why, any ideas would be helpfull. thanks

That is something you are unlikely to be able to change or fix.

Make sure your gear lever is adjusted properly and just push hard when you change.

you will have to get every bit out! what i have done is in the past poured fuel mixture into crack case ( head is off ect ect) tip engine upside down will help get any small bits of piston out. As for the gear change issue gearbox might need a reshim to aline everything lot of work if it was me i would live with it.

Sorry, ignore that, I was thinking of something else. You need to get bits of piston out. Odds are most of it is out the exhaust already BUT one little piece could just as easily wreck your new piston and or bottom end. Only way to be sure is to split the crankcase but this isn't a simple task, requires technical know how, tools and ideally new gaskets.

Think of it this way.

Lots of little pieces of metal are somewhere in your engine. Even the tiniest piece could cause the bottom end to eat itself. Flushing the bottom end out will help but you have no guarantee that it is clean.

Do you know anyone mechanically minded to help you split the crankcase?

There is no way to ensure the bottom end is free of debris without inspecting it.

Soaking your top end in water will do nothing. Just make sure there is no debris from your piston still in the engine.

found someone to help me split the crankcase for cleaning, but he advised me that it is neccessary to have the cylender rebored, i cant see any damage to the topend but he thinks i will have to do this anyway, i am working to a very tight budget and would rather not, what do you think?

Can't say without looking. Ideally yes because it could be damaged but you can't really know without stripping it down and using your finger to feel for any scores.

To clean out the bottom end....half fill the crank case with paraffin or kerosene, spin the crank a few times using the conrod by hand and flush. Easy way is lay the bike over and catch the paraffin in a container to inspect debris after its settled. Do this untill the bearings sound clean ( no grinding noise or rumbling ) when you turn the crank .... Repeat Untill no more debris comes out. If you can give it a blast with an airline to dry it off and remove any residue.
