Hi

I dug the gsxr out and rode it to work today, I need to tax it but my insurance isn't flagging up online.

I have my cover note, V5c and the money to do so, but I forgot my MOT certificate.

Can I tax it at a post office without it?

Thanks

No, as the post office will need to inspect all the docs, no mot doc no tax.

Regards

If you're only missing electronic ins then you'll have to phone the slack asrsed bastarts who issue your ins. It should be a legal requirement that these feckers update their shit. Mad
The same insurance folk be more than willing to shaft you if you don't up-date them in time. Shocked

You rode your bike to work without tax? Better hope you don't pass any ANPR cameras.

If it's not on the MID, that's gagging to get tugged and you better believe they'll do you for the VED if they can't do you for the insurance.

+1 to chasing up your dozy insuramongs. The DfT has a consultation running at the moment about getting shot of insurance certificates and relying totally on the MID. Shocked

Shocked Indeed. The MID does not work.

I insured two bikes 10 days ago. I just checked askmid and neither of them is showing on the database. I just had to phone my broker to get them to pull their finger out.

This is not the first time I have had to do this and last time it was with a different broker.

I am now off out with my insurance documents in my wallet and a recording of the conversation I just had with my broker on my MP3 player. As a rule I do not trust insurers or the police to get anything right, ever. If they do it's a nice surprise! Doing away with certificates and relying solely on the database is a recipe for disaster.

wasn't there a case of someone's car being seized as it wasn't showing on MID despite being insured.

She still had to pay the costs of recovery and collecting it.

You'll be fine. Unless you are a complete tool if you get stopped.

ANPR for tax is about 3 months behind generally.

Anything stopping me taking an old insurance cert with mot and v5 and getting more tax put on to help sell a bike?
The certificate expires in the future but the policy is no longer valid.

(Though you never actually see the bastarts LoL at you but I know they do Mad )

I wouldn't worry too much, it's been a long time since I've paid for tax on a bike.

Yes but how will they know it's not valid?
I took in a certificate from a policy that had started literally 20 minutes prior and there was no way it would show up on there systems yet.

Ahhhh I never read all the post. Embarassed

If you 'just' cancelled a policy but still hold the cert (which you are asked to return to brokers.) Then by all means the PO would issue. Based on the PO person's visual verification. I still belive they only issue the disc if the electronic gizmo checks all is in order.

I have no moral kwams about this BTW as the whole road tax issue is a fecking racket anyway.
I do object to cnut using vehicles without tax when I have been skunked twice now for stupid sorn issues when not even using the bastart vehicles or had them parked on the fecking road either. Mad

I asked them and they told me to just throw away the old certificate, even though I could've just photocopied it anyway if they asked for it back...

It's an offence to fail to either return or destroy a certificate of insurance[*].

Your problem is that you'll be flagged as having a bike that's neither SORNed nor insured, which is now an offence. In practice you should have about a month's grace before the DVLA start blackmailing you.

There's been some talk about removing the requirement to show evidence of insurance or MOT when buying VED, because we'll be caught out later by the totally infallible MID and DVLA. That's fun for the future though.

[*] Of course, if you have a piece of paper that purports to be a certificate of insurance, but which was sent to you speculatively to try and trick you into auto-renewing, I would and do just give a sad little laugh at the ridiculous demand to return it. Wink
