I'm looking to sell my bike in the next couple of months, so I'm trying to tart it up a bit.

Off the top of my head it has the following cosmetic 'features'

  • Rust and bubbling paint on the (silver) swing-arm, particularly around the shock absorber mounting point and where the chain runs over it
  • Poorly touched up paint on outside of petrol tank. Looks like the paint has been taken off with petrol drips at some point, particularly bad around the cap
  • Rusty chrome fork tube caps
  • Alloy top yoke looks a bit scruffy
  • Badly oxidised alloy all around (white chalky build up)
  • Surface rust on chain - recently new and well maintained FFS!
  • Deep scratches on end can (looks like a muppet has tried to polish these out with a WIRE BRUSH!?)
  • Cracks and scratches on nearly all the plastics (I've already 'plastic welded' the worse of these on the reverse)
  • Small dent in the tank

It has definitely been dropped more than a few times - problem is I am an 'honest' seller and don't like misleading people, but at the same time I don't want to list a huge list of shit that will put people off, so I would like to solve them - albeit as cheaply as possible - even if I can make it look less shit, that is something.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Pictures to follow.

[*]Rust and bubbling paint on the (silver) swing-arm, particularly around the shock absorber mounting point and where the chain runs over it

Either remove, rub down and paint, or leave.

[*]Poorly touched up paint on outside of petrol tank. Looks like the paint has been taken off with petrol drips at some point, particularly bad around the cap

Afford to respray the tank? If not, leave it.

[*]Rusty chrome fork tube caps

It has rusted, only option is to either remove and paint or leave it.

[*]Alloy top yoke looks a bit scruffy

They all do, clean, remove and paint.

[*]Badly oxidised alloy all around (white chalky build up)

Large wire brush and WD40/petrol/paraffin.

[*]Surface rust on chain - recently new and well maintained FFS!

Its winter (ish) scourer side of sponge and wd40/oil.

[*]Deep scratches on end can (looks like a muppet has tried to polish these out with a WIRE BRUSH!?)

Hmmm... hard one, just leave it.

[*]Cracks and scratches on nearly all the plastics (I've already 'plastic welded' the worse of these on the reverse)

Its a learner bike.

[*]Small dent in the tank [/list]

Learner bike.

It has definitely been dropped more than a few times.

Learner bike.

If you are an honest seller, say, I've tried to bring the bike back up to a decent standard, but as this was a learner bike, you can expect the typical scuffs etc.

My CBR was sold for nearly what I paid for it, after being used as a pogo stick on a roundabout and smashing all the plastics.

Thanks for the reply Paddy.

Yeah I know it's a learner bike, I'm not expecting miracles, just want to avoid putting people off. I paid £995 for it a year ago, I'd like the same back, really.

Get a fiver's worth of 3M vinyl sheet off eBay and cover all the scruffy bits like the yoke and even the tank if you're able.

Paddy's right, give it a good clean. most learners will be bouncing around inside at the thought of having their own bike and won't even notice.

+1

If you can't fix it properly, don't even try, it will just look like you've lashed it up or, even worse, like you've tried to hide something.

Clean it within an inch of it's life and leave the buyer to make their mind up.
