Ive had a quick look over the internet can find the right answer, I will ring the DVLA but there still not open Laughing
Misses brought a car through a friend, of a friend. However the V5 never arrived, & we dont have the green slip anywhere. We obviously didnt get the tax reminder. Car is insured in her name, and I know we need a V10 & V62 which I will get today. Can we still take this paper work for our local DVLA office and get tax tommorow, as thats when it runs out. I know DVLA can take up too 2 weeks to send a new V5 but she needs her car 3 times a week for uni, 50 miles away. We have contacted the guy about giving us the V5 number just so we can get it taxed. But he seems a bit dim & dosnt understand why we need it Laughing

If you get the v5 number to tax it the tax will be posted to the person on the v5, him.

I don't think you can tax it unless it is in your name and you have the docs.
Going to the dvla office will speed it up a bit but you won't be taxing it.

Sorry, I don't think there's a right answer to be found. I've never seen a way of getting VED without a V5C or the new keeper slip, and it sounds like Dim Guy is still registered as the keeper.

Weird, given how keen the DVLA are to take money from us under any other circumstances.

It's a Dvla win win.

They send a bill to the new owner for not having sorned car because they can't and the old owner gets a bill for not having informed of new keeper.

If you go to the local dvla or vro office they will let you tax the car provided you have insurance and tax and a letter from the previous owner stating they sold you the car!

When I didn't have any of the V documents I went to te post office with my insurance and mot, they gave me a V document to fill in, I did this, got the tax and they sent the V document off on my behalf. A few weeks later I got the V5. I'm not sure which document I filled in at the post office, but they were helpfull.

a new V5 will cost about £25, it is not like the old days when you could get a replacement free of charge.

What you can do is (beacause I done it to tax a car that was bought with no tax):

Ring the DVLA, explain that you haven't received your VC5 yet, but you'd like to check if the bike is actually registered to your address so that you can tax it online. They will then ask for your address and confirm if it matches the registered keepers address. If it does, go online and tax it, the disc will come to you.

It is worth ringing the DVLA to inform them you haven't received the V5 yet.

Because when i did so, they confirmed they had received the old V5 on X date from the old keeper and asked if i have not received my copy of the V5 yet? When i told them it hadn't arrived they offered to send out another V5 free of charge. I was so surprised Shocked
If it's already in your name, the tax would come to you if you tax it online. If they are offering to send the V5 to you again free of charge, you can rest assured that it's already registered in your name.

Note: They expect you to wait 6 weeks after purchase before calling up to chase the V5. And if they haven't received the V5 from the previous owner i strongly doubt they'd be helpful - they'd probably expect you to pay the £25 for the new V5 if you don't have the new keeper slip / they lose the new keeper slip for you.

But you need the v5 number or reminder letter to tax online. Neither will be given by dvla over the phone.
