2000 Fazer 600, get's on it to go to work yesterday and it's gone a bit grumbly Mc Grumbleson.... starting to sound like Mr Yaigi's Fazer with it's sieve of an exhaust system Crying or Very sad Honeymoon period over.

So I got a mirror out and had a look underneath in the light this morning and there's just this one tiny little hole, not even big enough to put the end of a screwdriver in, but nevertheless, it has begun..... the inevitable rot of the Fazer downpipes.

So I ask you, BCF, what next? Do I just bite the bullet and get the whole lot replaced as soon as is financially possible? Or given that it's such a tiny hole is there some kind of fix? Do I just wait til it gets worse? I mean, for such a tiny hole it sounds bad enough to me as it is.... I want me lovely smooth sounding bike back really.

The rest of the downpipes look so perfect (so much so I thought they were quite new when I got it and assumed they had already been replaced but must have been wrong!), seems mad that a tiny hole means the whole lot need to go Confused

Diagram of where the hole is on this lovely pic of these lovely shiny downpipes:

Find a friendly mechanic,

Get him to weld it up, should last a fair while, possibly get a piece of plate welded over the top

Long term i suspect new downpipes (preferably stainless) are the solution but if the rest isn’t too bad it might only cost £20 to get it welded,

To be fair, I'd be tempted to take the whole bike to a welder, and just get someone to spot weld it. Or maybe put a patch over it. Should be able to get access on the sidestand!?

Definitely worth doing seeing as you said yours still look like new elsewhere. And shouldn't cost much (probably a tenner!). I found a guy who refurbishes old VW buses and he does my welding mega cheap. Thumbs Up

My Dad owns a garage, he's a welder..... but I'm tempted to take it elsewhere as he doesn't have the greatest track record with my vehicles, it's like he doesn't give a damn cos he aint getting paid or something Laughing And for £10 to £20 it's probably worth it, I'd end up wasting the day at my Dads garage making tea and coffee Rolling Eyes

It would probably weld up ok, but if the metal has thinned a lot it would just blow through. Best to tig weld it and that's not cheap!

You've never been to my Dads garage and made coffee - He's asking for the next one before he's even finished the one he is on Laughing

Thanks though guys, I'm hoping it can be welded for now so I have a bit more time to collect together the £240 it will cost me to stick new ones on.

Any recommnedations/advice for when I do get new ones though?

Anything would out-do Mr Yaigi's, mine as it currently is still does for the moment Laughing You'd be proud of the bodge job that is his though Paddy, my Dad snapped the bolts getting it off, there was much swearing and drilling and more swearing but it got sorted eventually... just about enough to get it through the MOT..... until next time Laughing

What's a Ti system?

BMW is for the more refined gentleman.

I've heard Mr is a bit rough around the edges, enjoys motor boating and has a tendency to tap the fandango down the high street.

Man needs a Virago. Laughing

Ahahaaaaaaa, first of all OI! - I'm 30 this year too! Second of all, Mr Yaigi shaved his beard off last night, much to my dismay, I don't think he'll ever own a pair of slippers, and the only pipe he'll be smoking is that which contains weed Razz As for his future choice in bikes, well, if anything he'll be going all 90's racer - he was sooo close to buying one of these a few weeks back:

£240 for new downpipes? Madness.

Ebay. Took 2secs.

Fit them yourself, with new gaskets.

Excellent thanks for that Very Happy I did have a look on ebay but I was on work at the time so it wasn't a 'proper' look.

Paddy - I told Mr Yaigi about your YZF and he said he doesn't want to swap his Fazer, he wants to keep that as well Laughing - if you saw the size of the area we keep our bikes in you would know how much I laughed at him for that. Next house needs a garage.

Sidewinder - I don't even now what a self tapper is. Daughter of a mechanic you'd think I'd know some stuff but what it has basically meant is that I've never had to fix my own vehicle and I got damn good at making tea and coffee and having banter with blokey garage folk. Embarassed I would actually have a go of either this or fitting my own downpipes though, I know my way around a toolbox and I can read, can't be that hard if baby Paddy can do it Razz

Beard thread get.

You can patch it, but that's all money that could go towards the new downpipes that you'll need sooner rather than later.

I have had good success with fire cement/gun gum bodge job. Not a pretty fix, but if you have or know someone that has some lying around it's a fix that could cost pennies.
