Spanner set, material / brand recommendation?

I'm going to buy a spanner set (22pc or 24pc).

What should I look for, ie, steel / chrome / drop forged / vanadium are words that keep coming up on ebay.

Or should I be looking for a specific brand, the ones in my tool bag under my seat are Silverline (are they any good etc).

Any suggestions appreciated.

Halfords advanced professional. Not too expensive, lifetime guarantee.

My preferred weapons of choice would be Draper Expert, Halfords Professional, or Clarke Professional (from Machine Mart) in no particular order.
They're not the cheapest or the most expensive, but in my limited spannering experience they're decent quality that'll last.

Edit: They all have a lifetime guarantee as well.

I've got a set of silverline spanners. Had them for years.
I dont feel the need for expensive spanners, as I only use them on bolts/nuts which are either likely to be easy to undo, or have already been cracked off.

I've a nice set of 6 sided flank drive sockets for cracking off the tight stuff, and just use the main spanner set for odd jobs.

I do have extra long ring spanners, torx spanners, and a selection of short and long ratchet spanners, all of which are makes along the lines of Bergan, Halfords Pro, GearWrench, and Mac.
But my billy basic spanners, are just cheap Silverline, and I've never had a single problem with any of them.

One thing I've noticed with my Halfords Pro spanners is if I'm undoing something really tight with the open end, it seems to slip off, it's as if the spanner is bending slightly at the jaws. If I turn the spanner round to the ring end (12 point) it grips fine and undoes the bolt.

The sockets and ratchets, and ratcheting spanners have always been ace, but I don't have 100% faith in the normal spanners.

I don't think I've ever used an open ended spanner (Standard Flat style) which can undo a tight nut. Unless you pay out of your arsehole for SnapOn flank drive ones, and then technically they aren't open ended spanners.

Even the ring end of a spanner I don't agree with, unless it's a 6 sided drive, and not 12 point.

My personal rule of thumb is to use a socket where ever possible. (on tight stuff)

another vote for a halfords set, i like their ratchet spanner kits, and if you time it well for a bankholiday they usually run a promo online

unless you know a registered mechanic as they can get or usually have a "trade" card, and its a hell of a discount tbh
