Hi all, anyone with experience in replacing clutches (Binge?):

My 2003 1.2 Ibiza's clutch has started to misbehave, I'm not quite sure what is wrong with it to be honest and it's hard to describe. It seems to vibrate when pushing or releasing the pedal - I can't figure out whether the the vibration comes from the movement of the clutch itself or it the plate is warped/worn which when not fully engaged/disengaged causes the vibration. The biting point is very high though once in gear and the clutch is released it doesn't seem to slip (but at the same time, since it's started to vibrate I have been very gentle with it).

What do you guys think? I guess its the original and the car has done nearly 117k miles so I can't really complain. Has anyone ever changed a clutch on the 1.2 themselves? How much would I be looking all in to get a garage to do it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

All the best,

Joe

Try to pull away with the handbrake still on, this will give you an idea if the clutch is slipping or not.
It will stall if not and rev happily if it is. If the plate is warped sometimes this also helps wear down high spots.

Seat Ibiza is going to be one of the easier ones to do yourself, but if you've never done one it may be easier to ask around about someone who can do it for cash monies.

Have a ring around, The cost will vary alot between garages depending if they want the job or not.

Could be worn snapped clutch springs, warped clutch or oil contamination making it judder. If it is worn anyway, then replacing it sounds sensible.

Not sure about that model, but most simple clutches on small cars cost £300-450 at a garage. For that you'd want new thrust bearing (might be part of the slave cylinder), clutch plate and pressure plate.

The pricey bit is the labour, clutch kits are usually pretty cheap (<£100).
