So i've been looking to get a set of crash bars for my KLE 500 for a while, but I have a problem. Scouring Google, there appears to be only be two designs available, both of which intrude into the knee and leg room on the bike and don't really protect any of the engine parts like the crankcase or clutch/brake pedal.

https://www.moto24.org/media/catalog/product/cache/2/image/344ff7405533366c8801f83da5181707/s/b/sbl_08_327_100_201323765297-11161.jpg

I'm 6'4", and when I sit on my bike my knees go all the way to the end of the recessed bit under the tank. So neither of the 'proper' options will fit, but I was wondering, the ER-5 shares the same engine as the KLE-500 so would it be possible to use a set of ER-5 bars instead? Has anyone tried this? I know i'd probably have to cut a hole in either side of the the sump guard for the lowest mounting point but i'm okay with that.

Based on lots of google image searching I think these bars mount in the right places, but don't want to spend money on a set unless i'm more confident... If anyone has an ER-5 on crashies can they photo the mount points, that'd seal it for me.

id say find a set of second hand ones,
if they don't end up fitting, chuck them back on ebay, no love lost,
i think there is a good chance they will fit just looking at numerous photos of both bikes,
although the kle exhaust may also get in the way

You owe me some money for the use of the pictures of my bike Wink

I can take some better pictures of where the crash bars mount tomorrow if you want me to.

Yeah, I saw a few pics of those types, was considering them but i'm wary of crash bars with only dual mount points, just seem less sturdy than versions with triple mount points.

Your bike comes up third in the google image search for 'ER 5 Crash bars' when I set image size return filter to 'large' Razz Your bike is famous!

And please do, that would be incredibly useful! Also, if you bought them online and remember where from that would be awesome too! Very Happy

They do mount on 3 points Razz

One through the top part of the engine onto the other crash bar
One at the front of the cradle
One on the bottom of the cradle

Perfect.

Thanks ms51ves3! Thumbs Up From the looks of things the upper mounts are both the same as on the KLE, the lower mount is the only thing worrying me but I figure it's worth a punt. Just need a decent used set to come up on ebay/gumtree now! Razz

Bumping a month old thread with results- Finally managed to buy a pair of cheap ER5 crash bars, and offered them up to the KLE. tl;dr they fit but some tampering is needed.

https://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j328/Vracktal/Kawasaki/103_2049_zps2d6f8eea.jpg
All the mounts are in the same place.

https://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j328/Vracktal/Kawasaki/103_2052_zps8054e647.jpg
https://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j328/Vracktal/Kawasaki/103_2058_zpsbe3c1536.jpg

Lower mount fits fine both sides. Rear mounts fit fine too, although on the right hand side one it is necessary to relocate the brake-light switch for the footbrake as the bars fill the space it fits in.

https://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j328/Vracktal/Kawasaki/103_2056_zps4087897b.jpg

Also, you need a longer front engine bolt in order to fit the front mounts. I don't have one to hand but will go shopping for one later in the week, the bars are rock solid even with only 2/3 mounts. Also, there's a slight misalignment in the hole for the front mounts but i'm pretty sure this is down to the bars being a bit shagged rather than not fitting. Either way, it's only a few mm out so i'm pretty sure I can just hammer it into alignment when I get the new longer bolt.

https://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j328/Vracktal/Kawasaki/103_2053_zpsca277111.jpg

So, conclusion, ER-5 bars fit the KLE-500 as long as you don't mind relocating the rear brake switch and removing the sump guard. (will be modding that to fit with the bars on by cutting a section of it out either side at a later point aka when I can be arsed)
