right i have finally replaced my temporary gazebo (that was there 2 years)} with something more permanent, me the kids and the mrs all spend a lot of time in the garden (bbq's kids playing etc) sometimes (in summer) quite late on, i am unsure as to what method of heating to use ? gas patio heater, wood burner or electric halogen / infra red type thing, any ideas ???? it is quite expensive so dont want to buy one to discover it is crap hoping somebody has a better insight than me!

I would tend to rule out the woodburner with various flamable materials and neighbours close by.

Mmm it's not uncommon for the flames to come out of the chimney - perhaps not the best thing with a perspex roof Laughing

We have a chiminea. We also have neighbours who like to hang their washing out. So we have a chiminea that very rarely gets used. We're moving soon but we'll probably get some sort of halogen heater for the new house.

90 percent of the time it will be later in the night (i finish work at 11pm, spend an hour or 2 just chilling out, in the summer of course) so that should not be too bad

What about a waste oil burner? Can be made for a few quid and I'm sure most people would be willing to donate used motor oil etc

My OH makes both woodburners and oil burners out of old calor gas bottles, either of those would be ideal for that space (although the oil ones are a bit smelly sometimes!)

(and yes, you can get flames out of the chimney so position it to one side of your perspex roof!)

How about a small diesel or parafin heater? I would say it's best to avoid anything that has the chance of a naked flame coming out of it, especially if you want to chill out or fall asleep outside under your canopy at night with the heater on?

considering how exposed the area is your going to need a radient heater of somekind, probably a flame pit, patio heater or radient electric, although i dont know of any waterproof electric heaters offhand

i find an old style kettle barby works well on our decking as the metal is thin enough to radiate heat pretty well and the lid keeps sparks etc under control

i just like to chill out, i will have power sorted in the next few days, it is only exposed on 2 sides, and one of them the roof is lower so should not be a great deal of wind, and the roof is 100% waterproof too, so looking at the electric heating options a water resistent will do the trick, does not have to be full blown waterproof, we currently use a mall bbq with heat logs, not very good
