I'm selling my record player on eBay. It's been under the stairs with parcel tape stuck to it left over from when we moved house. I've just got round trying to peel the tape off, but I think because it's so old it's sort of disintegrating as I do so and leaving behind the adhesive.

I've tried to get the sticky residue off with soap and hot water but it won't budge. Something like acetone or petrol would take it off I'm sure but I'm worried it'll ruin the rather soft and fragile transparent plastic.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could try?

Vinegar may work and not damage the plastic

a quick google search list these

Nail Polish Remover
Petroleum Jelly
Toothpaste
Hand Lotion
Hair Spray
Baby Oil (mineral oil)
Vinegar (soak cloth, apply then leave for awhile–even overnight)
Rubbing Alcohol
Windex
Baking Soda & Water Paste (just rub in gently then wipe off with a warm wet cloth)
Lighter Fluid
Kerosene
WD-40 (set for 5 minutes)
Paint Thinner
Rubber Cement Thinner
Artgum Erasers / Pencil Erasers
Peanut Butter
Vegetable Oil / Olive Oil (set for about 2 hours)
Margarine
Cooking Spray
Mayonnaise (leave set for a few hours or overnight)
Goo Gone
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
Furniture Polish
Eucalyptus Oil
Tea Tree Oil
Perfume / Aftershave
PVC Pipe Cleaner
For surfaces that you’re afraid to damage, try heating the goo with a hair dryer then wiping off (firmly) with a wet warm & soapy cloth.
Duct Tape (press on goo firmly, life tape up quickly, repeat as needed)

Second vote for WD40. Works a treat.

I'd use isopropyl alcohol. But then, I have some. I use to to clean records and computer screens too.

Meths won't mark it.

Do not use WD40. The only two materieals the makers of WD40 recommend against are polycarbonate and transparent polythene plastic

WD40 on a cotton bud and dab sparingly. Leave it to spread out.

Failing that pour your diet coke on it, it's better than drinking the stuff Wink

Don't use isopropyl as this can lead to micro-cracking.

WD40 should do this with a bit of a soak, another possibility is to use white spirit.

Try rubbing it with neat washing up liquid. Then add a bit of water to sud it up a bit. Then have at it with a tea towel, rubbing very hard. Support it from underneath.

Trust me, I'm a chemist, and this is how I get bastard labels off CD cases.

Tried that already, that's how it's all smeared about.

I'll start with the least dangerous first, so Mr Sheen and a hairdryer I think. Soaking in vegetable oil might soften it all first too.

M' lud,

with the greatest respect, I have given you the solution, spray on some furniture polish, it doesn't have to be "Mr Sheen".
It will take three or four applications, (and you need to put quite a lot on each time), polish it off with a duster.
On the second application the glue will start dissolving and spread around a bit, after a couple more goes the lot will polish off!

I had to do this a couple of weeks ago, it works!!!!!

Does your lab have isopropanol?

If so, "borrow" some.

I would also try Mr sheen though as per Sid's suggestion, it does a surprisingly excellent job of degreasing very oily things, although I haven't tried it on label gunk.

Tried some of this this morning, didn't have time to finish the job so left it to soak but with enough rubbing it was coming off without damaging the plastic:
