Hello chaps,

Now before you tell me off and question why I'd like to do such a silly thing, I'm getting new tyres next week and won't feel like I've really got my money's worth until I roll into the shop with the canvas showing on my old tyre.

I've googled a bit, but I don't really trust yahoo answers and their 'just hold the front brake and give it gas' replies.

I'm sure maybe one or two of you here have done a burnout before, so can anyone help describe to do one and not look like this guy here: https://www.killsometime.com/videos/9312/Motorcycle-Douchebag-Burnout-Epic-Fail

Thank you kind people!

So what was the guy in the video doing wrong? Letting out the clutch too fast, too high revs, not enough weight forward?

Throttle was 'fine', if not abusive to the bike. It's hard to say anything other than let the clutch out like you do when you clutch up a wheelie. Don't dump it, don't pussy foot it, let it out fast and positively. Other than that, lean forward, then put your feet up and release the brake slowly. Wink

You can see in the second part of the video, he has it going, but then gets scared and pulls it back in.

looked as though he was being too harsh with the clutch causing the bike to try and wheelie which is why it was moving forwards instead of leaning forwards to put weight onto the front and easing the clutch out.

or that's how I'd attempt a burnout but I'm not planning on trying it.

He is banging 150hp to the wheel like an absolute cock stain.

Grab front brake, give 1/4-1/2 throttle using thumb, let clutch out and lean on handlebars.

job jobbed.

Safest; stick front wheel against a wall or curb.

If I don't know the bike, I'll stand up, consider getting my feet infront of the pegs so it lifts the rear up slightly*, then slowly release the clutch, using the throttle to keep it from stalling until it start to spin. Like when you learnt to pull away with the clutch.
Of course front brake is on hard.

* Of course this does give you the risk of the bike ploughing in to your legs if you mess up.

If I'm used to the bike and happy the front tyre is grippy enough, will just dump the clutch at the right point.

Or, to be a bit more 'pro' - go along at 5mph, stand up, modulate brake with throttle and clutch and do it properly Smile. On some bikes, like my old ZX9 you didn't even need to use the clutch - just increase brake and throttle until it's spinning up - but 143rwhp and first gear shorter than a 600s helped with that!
(Or with a cold Michelin on the back, you didn't need to bother with the front brake either - just open the throttle.)

It's very easy. On my mate's NSR 125 I just stand up while on the bike, push down on the front end with the brake in, slip the clutch a little with some throttle, should spin straight up.

On mine it's easier you don't need to slip the clutch.

And it takes ages to wear off the path. The mark is still there when I did a 2up mini-burnout last year.

If you're going for the pop, you can put a bit of pressure down on the seat too.

Turns out the petrol station just down the road got a bit concerned as their forecourt filled with smoke and the hole in the tarmac stayed there until they redeveloped the land!

Seems he grabbed a handful of front brake trying turn.

I really wanted to try that in my car, but all I could think was 'just remember how much the tyres are!'

I wish I wasn't so tight with money Sad.

If it's rear wheel drive with LSD - get your self to a drift day of some sort and they'll do you tyres for a fiver a wheel - or that was what it was last time I was there.

If you want to practice in a more safe way, then put your front wheel agaist a curb and then do it. It pretty much wont be able to lurch forward then.

That guy in the video... What a complete potato. He makes a complete cock of himself and then goes and bins it... I just burst out laughing in the uni library to the looks of many inquisitive people nearby.

The way i used to do them was push down the front end with the brake on then rev and let the clutch out, as long as you know where you biting point it etc your fine.

Doing them rolling is a bit harder, I used to have to really put my weight over the front susspension, very little brake then give it hell on the clutch and revs in first.

Love that the vid in the OP has more comments than the OP question. I recently burnt out the rear of my old 023 before a change. Can confirm the clutch didnt like it, nor did the neighbors. Did smell good though!
