Obviously I don't want to make a compromise on safety, but this month I have to as I can't afford both, which would you recommend getting first, bike boots, or leather armoured trousers?, as i already have an armourered leather jacket

What footware do you normally use on a bike?

How often are you likely to use your bike boots (ie I don't use my sports boots to go to the shops/work etc)?

I'd opt for the trousers first. I have a set of leathers for when I go pillion on my father in law's bike but use my armoured textile jacket and armoured textile trousers when I commuting. I also always wear my boots no matter what I'm on, I bought a pair of Akito boots the other day for £45 brand new off ebay, I think I showed you on MSN RooRoo.

You could have a look at J&S or similar.

Personally I would go for boots.
I don't like riding in trainers at all. I will always wear leather boots, though often hi-tech magnums for general riding. While they aren't up to good bike boots, they do help in low speed spills.

Whatever you do Roo, don't be tempted to put some steel toecap boots on. You risk losing your toes if you come off. Sad

Yeah - go for boots first.

I got some Sidi Rain's from the NEC for £95. If you're going to ride in winter, or any time in the rain then getting some waterproof boots will be a good idea.

Look to spend around about £100 I say.

I'd go against the grain here.

Although trainers are bad footwear to wear on a bike as they are designed to grip the road, so when you come off and land your whole body slides but your feet don't.

I had a low speed slide and i was wearing trainers but i was lucky that they landed on the side so didn't grip so well and was wearing jeans. My legs are now very sore.

I go for trousers!

Mmm.

Legs heal - ankles and feet hardly ever heal back to what they were before!

Roo, given your apparent fascination with the male G spot, wouldn't a pair of leather chaps be more fitting? Wink

I knew someone who snapped there ankle wearing trainers on a 125 and even Steve Berry from the TV wore trainers on a scoot and broke his leg.

I wouldn't even chance riding in nothing but bike boots, I was wearing mine when I had my accident and I didn't sustain any major injuries.
and I can say if I wasn't wearing them then I would have snapped my ankle when I hit the kerb!

Also I was wearing a normal pair of jeans and just got a grazed knee and a bruise.

So I'd say go for the boots!

If you do go for boots RooRoo then I would wear them all the time. Even that 15 minute commute. It might take 15 mins to get to work but it only takes a second to snap ann ankle Confused . Only takes a few seconds to slip them on anyway Thumbs Up

I can't vouch for the qaulity of the cheap stuff, but it's going to be better than what you got at the moment.

Boots from £10! ... Trousers from £60, so you could probably get both if they fit you ok.

Hi

I would say go for boots. Ankles are very hard to fix compared to the rest of your leg.

All the best

Keith

Boots.

If you're worried about your legs, just wear a couple of pairs of jeans.

What size boots are you after? I've got a pair of (well used) SMX's sat in my garage that are getting closer to the bin every time i go near them.

if you cant stretch to proper bike boots, UK Combat Boots cost 40 quid, and are better than trainers (anything is)

I'd say boots, the army boots I'm wearing atm are a pain in the arse to move about (get under) the gear lever, as the toes are quite large. Trainers are a dead loss, they've no protection, and the soft uppers hurt my foot gear changing anyway.

Trousers are trousers are trousers, it's the knee armour which counts most imo. Lowsiding it and smacking your knee isn't be much fun in leather or jeans. (I haven't, my brother chipped his kneecap from doing it on wet cobbles.)

edit: You can get pretty decent boots from Heine Gericke for £60.
