Does anyone know if you need a legal sized number plate for an MOT. Infact do you even need a number plate fitted for an mot? I don't remember seeing a check box for it on the list of things they check.

I am pretty sure that a bike won't pass an MOT with an illegal sized number plate.

I'm not to sure about the specifics but I'm pretty sure your bike has to be 'legal' to pass the MOT. If the examiner spots the plate and knows it's illegal then he/she can fail you, check box or not.

Could just phone the test centre to find out...

Good luck Thumbs Up

The reason I ask do you even need a number plate is because when importing a bike you NEED an mot before you can apply for a registration, so how could you have a number plate fitted for the MOT.

Ok, so say i turn up with no number plate, how do they fill in the registration number box? The MOT is linked to the number plate so that when cops do a check on the bike it tells them if its moted?

Ok, I have one final problem Razz How does one get the bike to the MOT testing area when you have no number plate?

<explanation>
I bought field bike that came with log book but no number plate, He just gave me the log book so it isn't in my name. I tried to get a number plate made up in halfords but you need log book and ID to prove you are the person on the log book!

I would send the log book off to get it in my name however I'm selling the bike with no intention of riding it. I don't want to add another previous owner to the list just to get a number plate.

</explanation>

They MOT it using the frame number.

I would ride it since I could carry the log book and driving licence with me so if I were to get pulled I could beg forgiveness. However since the log book/bike isn't in my name I doubt they would be very sympathetic. I could Make a cardboard cut out like a good hippy friend of mine once did...

Anyway, I have ordered a 'show plate' that is 9 X 7 inch in arial bold off malplates.co.uk that way I don't need to send my log book away.

To confirm: you do not need a numberplate for an MOT.

You ARE ALLOWED to ride a bike to the MOT with no numberplate, as long as you let the MOT station know that you are doing this.

I've done it on one of dad's bikes - even sat in a petrol station next to a police car, I let them know that I had permission from the MOT station and they said "yeah, that's no problem".

You need a legal size number plate for the MOT but you do not need a chassis number.

No its not Kev - I did it when I had to register my NSR. It hadn't been registered so had no number - they did it on the frame number.

Just to add on from that post I made on Jo`s account, you don't need to have one if it is having its first MOT after being imported but that test is done by the DVLA who will issue you a plate on the spot.

Frame numbers on motorcycles are not needed for the MOT unless the vehicle isn't registered in this country yet.

Thats my point Kev - it wasn't registered at the time so the MOT was done on the frame, not registration number.

its probley the rule but every one knows what MOT places can be like some just let people off with small plates or illegal exhausts/cans, its no danger to road users or the public
