How long should a battery last on a bike not being used? I've not been fit enough to ride since my off back in October (13th) and my bike has been stored in a friends garage. I haven't seen it since the accident but I know it's just been left there.

I'm hoping to take a look at it this weekend, but should I expect the battery to be flat? If so would one of those optimate things 'sort it' or have I screwed up and will need a new one?

Thanks

Andy

It might work, it might not.

Batteries do not like the cold or long periods of not being used though. Take a charger just in case.

5 months is a long time for a battery to be sat, especially as it spans winter.

It will definitely need a charge, I'd say you have a 50/50 that it will recover enough to be useful long term.

If you have an alarm on the bike then you have no chance of it being ok!

Are those Optimate things any good? It's likely that it'll stay there for another week or so while I get getting it collected, fixed and sorted out. So if they are useful I could just leave it on charge and let the optimate do it's magic.

If it's a Motobatt one, it'll probably still have loads of life in it. You should be OK and get away with a quick charge. Would be better left disconnected.

I'm not sure what a MotoBatt battery is. The bike has whatever is standard for the Honda CBF125 - is it likely to be a motobatt one or just the cheapest they could find?

No alarm, but it does have Honda immobiliser thing - but that's only for when you try to start it, right?

Thanks for the answers

It probably wont have enough power to start on the button but it should bump start pretty easy.

When my reg/rec was fooked on my cbr it would bump start very easily with only 10v in the battery.

That being said i would still take a charger with you just in case.

Yes Optimates are very good indeed. If you have one then it should recover the battery. You can also leave them connected during lay ups to maintain battery condition. Thumbs Up

Just a little update..

My mate started the bike last night with no trouble at all - No charging required. That's fairly impressive in my book, after 5 months just sitting there Smile

Will stick it on the optimate when it gets delivered and after I've picked up the bike.
