I'm not going to even attempt to play Starfield on my current 6+ year old PC so I'm thinking roughly about what I'll build. So far I'm leaning towards AMD not 'cos I hate Intel more just to see what shade of grass is on the other side of the fence Smile

Ryzen 5 7600X

AFAIK there's not much difference between the Ryzen 5 7600 vs 7600X once you get to overclocking them so I'd probably just go with whatever I can get a good deal on.

B650 motherboard

Does it really make much odds which manufacturer/model I go with?

2x 16GB DDR5

What's better 2x16GB or 4x8GB?

1TB WD Black SN850X M.2 drive

This seems to have good reviews and you can optionally get the one with an OEM heatsink.

Sapphire RX 7600 graphics card

Bargain basement but with reasonable reviews.

All-in-one CPU water cooler

AMD is known to run hot Smile

Lian Li Lancool 205M mesh fronted case

Glass fronted cases just sound like a dumb idea to me I'll take better airflow, thanks very much!

700W PSU (80+ bronze)

600W is probably the minimum for the above components but I'm assuming it's better to have some overhead? I might stretch to 80+ gold if anyone thinks it makes much odds.

How does that lot sound?

I have the 7600x, 32GB ram (because some games want 16 and Windows chunks a bit) and a 4080 and I've got every single game.on absolute max, I wouldn't say it's too mid level gaming. I have an 850W PSU though as it suggests I'm using 500ish.

My pc has an air cooler (got fed up going full water and AIO is just yawn) and I'm running mid 60s at full chat on Starfield. Idle and general roaming is about 40c.

Board wise I just use gigabyte stuff, but went aorus elite this time rather than budget as I want to overclock.

It'll be a decent build regardless. Just make sure the board supports that processor and you'll be fine.

I have the 7600X it's pretty good, I got it for £349.99 in a bundlke with a B650 PG Riptide board on SCAN).

2 x DIMMs is preferred as most boards only qualify the speed and timings using 2 DIMMs and it's easier and cheaper to go with that. I got Corsiar Vengeance DDR5 6000 MT/s (2 x 16GB) for £116.99 on SCAN.

I got a AIO cooler for it the Thermaltak TH240 it works perfectly well and never comes close to thermally throttling and it very quiet. It was £79.99 on SCAN.

I have a MSI RTX 3090 SUPRIM X that I carried over from the previous build. Put it all in a Fractal Design Pop Air case to finish it (£89.99) and decided to give away the old 750W power supply I used and move to an 850W fully modular AeroCool Integrator unit (£89.99).

Check out be quiet! Cases, aio coolers and psu.
I'm a bit of a fanboi, but the gear always performs well.

Yo.

A few months ago I upgraded from:-

Temeluchus' i7 4790k
ASUS Maximus VII Ranger
32GB
5600xt

To:-

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II
64gb ram
6700xt

The new gear runs Starfield @1440p / 112fps (average)

The cpu and gpu seem to be pretty well matched, benchmarking doesn't show either being bottle-necked by the other.

The kit runs a bit warmer when compared to the old gear, but I have the following stuff which tends to work well.

Case - Pure Base 500DX
AIO Cooler - SILENT LOOP 2 240mm
PSU - DARK POWER 13 850W

I refuse to jump into the latest gen stuff, I have the view that you get better performance per £ for previous gen.

112? Beating all those with a 4080

I've got it on medium and hitting 90ish, if I get everything on max ultra its scraping 50s. The 6750XT is averaging 1440p @ 45fps... its all over that people are struggling with 4080s, I would be amazed if its that high!

Ah I gotcha, in the zones where there is almost nada, yeah thats fair, but get in combat on ground at Atlantis (don't, you'll never return and they will murder you) I get roughly 65-70 on medium during all out gunfights.

Still better than Star Citizen though so...

I want to upgrade my mobo / cpu / ram. They're about 5 years old now (ish). I recently upgraded almost everything else.

Current spec:-

Hyte Y60 Dual Chamber Case
Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master CF Main Board
Intel i9-9900K CPU
Corsair H100i Elite LCD Screen XT AIO Cooler
MSI RTX 4090 Suprim X 24gb GPU
64gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 4200mhz DDR4 Ram
3 x 1TB NVMe Samsung 970 EVO SSDs
Corsair RM1200x Shift Series PSU

Do I wait for new Intel chips in Oct / Nov? Do I upgrade with current latest stuff now?

Depends on what resolution you're gaming. If you're playing at 1080p then your CPU is heavily bottlenecking that card, but if you're playing at 2160p then you don't need to change anything at all. Your performance gains will be marginal only.

Everything @ 4K 60fps

The reason for the upgrade is I'm going to build another rig with a 3080 Ti in it (card been lying about since the 4090 upgrade) and give to the mrs.

I don't need to upgrade anything really, happy with it but the mrs wants a PC so might as well bang the best shit in it now so it's future proofed for another 5 years.

Call me gay but 4K just doesn't do it for me. Nothing looks better in 4k than 1440p and I'd much rather 120fps smoothness than 60fps herpes.

Why don't you just put the 3080Ti into the rig you already have since that CPU is still going to bottleneck the 3080Ti in 1080p but not in 4K.

Take your 4090 and put it into a rig that will make full use of it. Also that RMx 1200 is stupidly over-spec'd for your current machine and even your next machine. You ain't putting two 4090's in one machine so 850W will do you no matter what CPU you choose.

What's the budget for the new PC?

I can get by with 1080p. Heck, if I took off my glasses 480p would do Laughing

My latest system was built for 1440p, perfect mix of image quality and the ability to run at a decent frame rate IMO. Got rid of my 4K 60 monitor a couple of years back and haven't looked back.

My specs:

5600X
Aorus Elite V2 B550
32GB DDR4 3200
Powercolor 6800XT
LG GK650F 32"
H7 Flow
Kraken X73
RM850x

Absolutely smashes everything I throw at it, really happy with how well it runs tbh.

The only thing which is old in my current rig I listed is the CPU / RAM / Mobo - Everything else was upgraded a couple months ago. I'm aware the PSU is overpowered Laughing

So if I buy the latest CPU / Mobo / Ram and build into current rig, I can take:-

Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master CF Main Board
Intel i9-9900K CPU
64gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 4200mhz DDR4 Ram

And add the 3080 Ti to it, grab a case and few bits and there's the mrs rig.

What's the budget for the new PC? There isn't one

Payday so got my order in. I've gone with pretty much the spec I outlined. Went with a slightly meatier PSU with some funky "eco mode" that makes the fan hum kumbaya or something.

Nice! Already have a voucher for a free copy of Starfield. Damn! Need to verify I have a qualifying AMD product installed Sad (Not that it'd run particularly well on my current set up.)

And I've found a home for my old PC: my cousin's current computer runs on clockwork so almost anything would be an improvement Smile

Enjoy mate, that's a decent spec'd computer you will have. As long as you stick to 1080p that graphics card will do nicely for a few years too.

Similar to my build except for my 3070. Recently re-downloaded Cyberpunk with the new updates and it was running at 20 FPS (in-game benchmark). Simple driver update and now 90 FPS - with ray tracing enabled. No need for a system upgrade here just yet, thankfully.

Ditch the water cooler and get a better GPU, I've never had a problem with the standard AMD cooler and if you want to run Starfield you need all the performance you can get. I have a 6700xt that I bought to play starfield and I'm struggling to even get a smooth 50fps.
