Hi all

I'm looking for a bit of advice regarding Servicing of my Bike (GSR600K8) it's about due it's 3rd service 7500 miles and I've been meaning to book it in since the beginning of the month but working 6-7 days a week and being swamped at work I forgot about it and now I'm nearing my week off I probably wont get it booked in as they will no doubt be busy.

now I've been going over my manual and it all looks pretty straightforward oil change, spark-plugs, air filter, check/tighten bolts etc however there is also a "Throttle Valve Synchronization" due

so my Questions are:

What is a throttle valve Sync, is it important, can I do it myself ?

and how important is a service history really ? (esp since I've had the bike since new)

Thanks
zx

Throttle valve sync when done correctly will ensure the bike runs smoother and more efficiently.

Carbs can be done with vacuum gauges but EFI's are usually done by plugging in a laptop/dealer service tool, reading the Manifold Absolute Pressures and ensuring they're all identical. Adjustment (synchronisation) is by way of an almost imperceptible amount of movement of the appropriate screw.

With EFI, using a vacuum gauge (whilst getting things close) does not unfortunately achieve the same results that using the MAP values would.

You could do everything else yourself and book it in at a dealer just for the synchronisation - even with an EFI it shouldn't take any time at all if the adjusting screws are easily accessible. Whilst I don't have your particular make/model of bike, I can check and balance my throttle bodies in less than 15 minutes - assuming the laptops charged up!
Hopefully a 'professional' shouldn't need to charge more than 1/2 hour's labour.

Thanks's for the replies.

I managed to find a service manual for the GSR600 although its for a 2006 model it does explain how to do it, which is pretty much how they figured it out on "mudcow007"s link, apparently you put it in dealer mode (easily doable) and set the rpm to 1 300 r/min then use a vacuume gauge.

I suppose the first thing I should do is check and see if I can get my bike booked in and if not take it from there.
