hi guys,

today I tried starting the wifes b1h zx6r today... however the first time ever in its life it had a flat battery.

We tried bumping it to no avail so jump started it... positive to positive, negative to frame.

It fired straight up and we revved it a little and took the leads off, but within about 20 seconds it died... completely dead battery again.

so we repeated and again, even holding the revs at about 2-2.5k revs it died after around the same time.

now a friend says its probably the battery is completely knackered and not holding any charge at all, however I'm thinking that when its running doesnt it draw power direct that way?

so what do i check first/swap first? battery or something else (i would use the right word but cant remember what the 'alternator' on a bike is called).

Have you got a multimeter to check how much the battery is putting out?

Surely the bike would have to run a while to charge the battery up again? I'd be getting a cheap trickle charger off eBay or something, letting it charge overnight and seeing what the deal is. You're gonna need one to charge any battery you buy anyway?

How long has the bike been stood?

bike has not been run for maybe a month... never had this problem before so didnt have it on charger. Ive got a trickle charger so will charge/try to charge it anyway.

I wasnt expecting it to charge the battery within 30 seconds, however i also wasnt expecting it to just die after 30 seconds.

I never turned it off and tried to restart, the display would just start flickering and the bike would cut out... so to me that seems like the battery is getting a little charge off the jump, using that and then not charging more as the engine is running off the stator or rectifier?

I imagine the ridiculously cold spring we're having might have killed off the battery when it normally wouldn't.

Is the bike fuel injected? I thought the new fancy pants bikes needed power to run/won't even bump start if there's no charge.

To be honest, I don't really know. I'm just guessing here, this is what I'd be doing. I'm sure someone with a bit more knowledge will be along shortly Very Happy
