yes I know its that time of year again, have you seen it? the nerve of those cheeky scamps in power. they have declared war on us motorbicyclists, with their unjust and never before seen gargantuan road tax increases.

that's right a £1 - £2 increase this year, depending on your choice of 2 wheeled machine, what are we to do? surely everyone is up in arms about such an increase? protest ride to the capital? kidnap and hold the chancellor to ransom?

Im at a loss as to what to do, I need to refinance the house, and juggle all my finances to meet this extra demand, it may just push me over the edge Laughing

But on a more serious note, is it right that we have to continue to pay VED, when the least polluting cars are still having a tax exempt status?

Seen the amount of crap that comes out the back of bikes? we may get 40mpg but we still pollute a fair amount (nope, I don't care either)

Bike tax is utter BS because they base it solely on engine size and not emissions - for example, my [75~80mpg] NC700 VED is set at £76 per year, but a [30mpg] super sports 600 only pays £55 despite chewing through twice as much fuel and spewing out far more CO2. Go figure.

With a bit of haggling and blagging on my part I got my bike insurance cheaper again this year. For a laugh I decided to run some quotes on quick cars, cheapest came back at between seven hundred and fifty and nine hundred pounds. Then add on top road fund extortion of either £270, £460 or £475 per annum.

For less than the £460 road fund extortion on a band L fruity car, I can tax and insure a 400cc bike and a 600cc bike and still have £160 cash in my pocket to pay for fuel and consumables.

Quickish 600cc bike=£55 a year tax and £130 a year fully comp. Total £185

Quickish car=£460 a year tax and £750 a year fully comp. Total £1210

Not CO2 though, which is what car VED is based on.

And all bikes are exempt from That London's "congestion" charge, when only the most smug of 4 wheeled ecomobiles enjoy that privilege.

It's a bit of a mess.

Should go down though not up if they want to keep encouraging people out of the cars.

I ditched my car partly because biking was cheaper so it does work.

We ought to do a modern Guy Fawkes and have a mass ride into London, park under the Houses of Parliament and rev the t*t's off them until we gas them all. Job sorted. Laughing

Only because with no front plate the arses at NCP (who run it for TfL) can't tell where bikes are going into the zone.

But the only people they can encourage out of cars are people with a bike license (or CBT for short distances).

90% of people I know wouldn't consider a bike. It costs too much now. The government idea to make it as awkward as possible to get a bike license is stopping people getting a bike to replace the car for commuting.

How much is a CBT now? I'm guessing £100?? And then add on £500-£1000 for the machine and £100+ for insurance, just to drive a moped/125 a few miles to work. That's just a little bike and we all know how expensive direct access if you have to get a bigger bike for any distance.

Who is going to do that if they already are struggling for cash and already have a car.

I did, did my CBT a year ago, had a bike for a month, it got nicked, waited 3 months for the insurance to stop arseing about, and I got another bike, that's the only reason I didn't get a full licence before Jan 19th.

What gets me though is how can a CAR be congestion-exempt? Do they suddenly shrink to two foot wide when the roads are busy?

I ain't too keen on pre 73 cars getting free VED. The thought of some rich kid with a classic Ferrari being subsidized by the rest of us sticks in the craw a bit.
