I've been mildly into detailing for years with cars but got bored so never really had amazing results when using the gear. However I've been getting more determined to clean the tank of my bike up after more and more swirls and marring were cropping up.

I know tank pads are the answer but I figure who am I protecting for, me or the next owner as I certainly wouldn't see the unmarked paint below unless the pads were removed.

S I figured I'd sort out the blemishes and apply some serious layers of wax and sealant to limit the inevitable damage that occurs from my legs rubbing the tank.

Washed with snowfoam and the two bucket method:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/wellyz/6861cd29c4a2792099bfaf53eaa2f99c.jpg

Then this is the marking on the tank sides which has built up over a few months since the last time I polished it out:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/wellyz/26e0602157cce2d02b1348a274546fd8.jpg

And this is what it looked like after 2 passes with a machine polisher:

I've never had such success so it's all down to the new product I'm using. I've spent so much money on the higher budget stuff especially for dual action polishing machines but this product is way better and you can use it by hand, so I recommend it for anyone else who fancies a go wether by elbow grease or machine.

I'm working on the sealant now to keep the hard work in removing the swirls protected for as long as possible.

That foam stuff looks crazy. Razz

I corrected the paint on my van, using a tin of white hammerite, and an 8" foam roller.

Took a few hours, and went from this:

Cost me less than £50, It's a great success. Laughing

It even made the wheels look different Twisted Evil

It's dropped 100mm on Clio 172 shocks and springs. Rear end is adjustable torsion bar.

Ref the tank pad. I totally agree with you. I always wonder why people fit the big ones up either side of the tank.
Similar to people who fit seats covers in their cars, which look totally shit. Laughing

I have a Mac tools seat cover on my van seats, but it's only for my journey to and from work when I'm in dirty overalls, as the van's fitted with grey leathers.

But come the weekend, they're off! I wanna enjoy the thing, not worry about aging it.

Have you considered plasti-dip for the sides of the tanks?

Plast-dip is a great product, used it on the exterior trim pieces on my car.

However I think it would defy the point in this situation, I don't want to cover it up or protect it for someone else. I know of a product range that solidifies as a layer of glass over 48hrs, will try that out.

I've got a small transparent square where my crotch touches the tank(ooer) that the previous owner put on, does a good job and is barely noticeable.

I'd like to get some paint correction done on my car, but it's pretty expensive to get it down professionally!

My car had this done, before I brought it, but it sat outside for 18months after, so it could do with another going over. The bonnet was also re-sprayed and wasn't polished afterwards so that needs doing too. I think you can get a decent exterior detailing and pain correction treatment for £150-200. Not really that much to spend if your keen on your car?

I'll be having mine done after Easter, so I'll pop some before and after pics up on here to see if there's much difference.

That's not so bad, I'd pay around that. I have a black car, and they are notoriously hard to keep the paintwork looking good. I thought it was going to cost me over 500 quid!

I do this as a hobby, if anyone's interested.

The trader I got my bike from was pretty keen for me to do his bikes when he gets them Cool

I've got a page on Facebook: RJ Detailing if anyone's curious.

Like Jap cars, Jap bikes are easy to correct, as the paint is soft by comparison to european models.

Brazzers, a household name that!

I only recently realised I wasn't getting my mix right, I bought a new lance as my old one died and this one said but 2inches deep of snow foam in (sorry, not got a volumetric figure) then I just use tome maxi suds II in for extra froth.

Russ I completely forgot about that, I've only done ford before and each time was really tough, very minimal improvement. I did use meguairs 83 before and that was pants in comparison to the scratch x

Anyway, finally put the sealant on. Apparently after curing over 24 hours it turns to glass, hopefully that'll limit some of the tank scratching Smile
