Avoiding Embarassed yesterday I needed to use the horn and got just a faint 'bleh' noise. While the headlights did not fail, indicators became intermittent and I got the impression of impending electrical Doom. And fire. Made no difference to the running. I have the day off, but needs to be fixed for tomorrows commute Sad

First proper electrical failure since the battery/regulator went to shit in 2012. Battery is 6 years old probably needs replacing soon.

Finally managed to source a stiffer shock spring for Gixxer. Turned out to be more of a PITA than I imagined.
Thankfully K-Tech came up with the goods, although it did require a custom washer for one end. Most importantly, the spring is red Very Happy

I also bought a few brass adaptors and a schrader valve to convert a Motion Pro nitrogen needle to work with a mountain bike shock pump.
This meant I could pressurise the bladder as part of the oil refill process without the need for £350 worth of Nitrogen refilling station equipment.

In theory I can run the shock on air (aiming for around 25% less PSI than Nitrogen to account for its temperature instability). But I'll be trying to get it refilled with Nitrogen locally next weekend.

All plastic panels returned back onto the bike.
I'm amazed to see that the exhaust actually follows a correct route now since I reworked a rear support bracket. No plastics will be melted nor arses burnt.
It's effectively ready to ride but I'm still keeping it off the roads till the salt is gone. I still have some jobs I might as well do while I'm waiting.

Post-winter beginning of winter Neutral Fork seals cleaning. Already started to leak, but there was a lot of dirt in there. She had new seals and bushings less than 10k miles ago, but appears to seal up fine after a clean. Only took 20 mins, not too bad.

This has been a recurring annoyance since about 75k miles, and I hope it does not continue. Anyone clean them as routine maintenance?

Already got 20 friends at work that want a go in it. Be interesting. But just going to use a ballast for the moment and get used to it for a few months.

Get a few bags of sand in there 4 should do it. 100 odd kilos ballast will help a lot. I rode my dads combination
(without his knowledge) on more than a few occasions when I was about 17. It was easier with a passenger than without.
That was a Honda 400/4 plus a Squire wedge sidecar if you're interested.

Thanks for the advice this is a squire RS1 with wiring and subframe I'm getting it at a decent price. I'll make sure I get the sand to go in the side car. Be safer than riding it empty for the mean time. Should look something like this when it's all set up however with my bike obviously. Going to start the painting soon dreading sanding it down though.

quick chain lube yesterday

spent ages looking for front sprocket cover after id done, gave up

today i remembered I only removed one bolt and rotated it out of the way and it is still on the bike Embarassed

So today I thought I'd better give the bike a quick shakedown run around town, as I'm leading a trail ride on Thursday.

Much faffing, as I'd forgotten about the chain cover, and couldn't remember the safe place I'd put the stray bolt once I'd found it. Went through a box of spare nuts and bolts, found one did it up very finger tight, figured it would last the mile to motorcycle shop.

Stalled at traffic lights Rolling Eyes so next traffic lights blipping throttle cos don't want to stall, bike still cold. Old man starts waving his arms at me, I thought he was moaning about me blipping throttle, but he yelled that a bolt had just fallen off my bike. I said not to worry about it, not important, as lights changed. I assumed finger tight bolt and fallen out.

Got to garage, puzzled as the bolt I'd put in was still there, and I remembered the safe place I'd put the original missing bolt in, I'd balanced it on the frame. Rolling Eyes

Bike seems fine, I think it enjoyed hibernating.

Tail tidy on the Spacker. Need new numberplate as the holes don't line up on the old one. Big improvement overall though. Thumbs Up

Cheers to Fretgrinder for the help with that and for the company of course.

When I was younger I would laugh at the miserable embarrassed people stuck sitting in sidecars but now? OMG I want one. Not only would it be useful for carrying coal and firewood but it could also be great fun like in that gif.

Question about sidecars: Could you remove the body section and replace it with a motorcycle carrier? A 3 wheeler bike carrying a bike by its side?

Ha maybe in the future, well yesterday I did some prep work and took the bike to a local garage to do the steering head bearings and change the fork springs from standard to progressive. At least I can turn right now, the head bearings were gone to say the least. Grease had dried up.

At this rate looks like sidecar will be another week Sad

Deciding to paint the front end of the bike now, not sure what colour but got to be done; not feeling the black at all on the fairing.

Today I'll be finishing up prep work and then painting it with barcoat isolater as recommended by a good friend. Then working out how to do the rest of the paint on the chair.

Meanwhile taking bike to the garage for it's mot; and double check everything is ok.

Changed the oil. Cleaned the pick-up filter (only filter on this bike lol) but as last time, no detritus whatever in the mesh. Cleaned, lubed and adjusted chain.

I had one on a Russian. Sidecar must be constructed or adapted to carry passengers or goods. There are some restrictions on where the sidecar wheel must be (not forward or aft of the bike's wheels (or extremities, can't remember which), may be changes to old law. Sometimes I had a home-made ply-and-fibreglass body on it, sometimes a flat wooden door. It came up the M1 at about 40 with a load of paving slabs on it, had to pull like mad on the handlebars. Don't see why a bike carrier would be a problem, in principle. It had an ordinary arm-chair on it briefly. I wanted to put an office swivel chair on it but didn't get around to it (and there was another project...).. I still have the thing somewhere, and the bike, but it needs exhausts and a rebore. It was the thing that took me two days to get back from Cornwall on due to breakdowns.

One think about outfits: they are the very best vehicles to have fun on in the snow, bar none. It's the offset load and braking (if no sidecar brake), and the ability to use the front wheel as a rudder. You can do lots of silly things like drive up the high street with the sidecar in the air.

Oh, at last I meet a fellow charioteer who has experienced the fun to be had with outfits. I haven't currently got one but would love another.
Years ago with a '53 Flash and Avon, I was one of the only ones to get into work during the '59 winter, and that was on the back roads from Edgehill to RAF Gaydon. Some years later, with an A7 and chassis, I would get into work at Oxford Airport from Charlbury thrugh several inches of snow, together with a mate with a Tribsa and chassis, we would laugh at some people who couldn't even get out of their drives in Woodstock.
Then more years later, I popped a chassis on my Revere when doing courier work from the LHR area. It was great on the ice, and after daily bank runs, I would entertain my mates en route from Feltham back to the depot on the Southern Perimeter Road with the chassis in the air for most of the way. Great fun and good times.
The beauty of an outfit is the one driving wheel, and by bouncing on the back as per trials car procedures one can usually get going. Also it is very good for steering as you have mentioned.
