My CB500 - What's It Worth?

I'm going to sell my old 2001/Y CB500S. I originally bought it as a year-round commuter about 5 years ago, but it hardly gets touched anymore. It's spent most of its life outdoors, so cosmetically, it's not the prettiest of things.

I've left a few pics and info below:

-27k on the clock.
-Lots of MOT's, but service history book is missing - I do have a receipt showing valve clearances were checked 5k ago, though.
-Scottoiler
-Seat has cracked up a fair bit and has lots of duck tape on it Cool
-MOT until end of September.
-Tax until end of August.
-It looks like someone has put one of the front forks in a vice at some point as the top is scratched a bit. However, it's been like this since I bought it and never caused an issue.
-Throttle return sticks a bit, so will need sorting for next MOT.
-Tyres have a fair bit of tread, but it looks like the rubber is beginning to crack a little bit, so may need replacing soon.
-Rev counter doesn't work.
-A fair bit of corrosion all-round...

That's about it really. Mechanically, it seems fine apart from the bits listed above. What do you reckon I could fetch for it?

@BigDan - That's more than I expected! Thanks for your reply.

@Supermoto_Fan - Very true. It's surprising how many bikes/cars you see advertised and people going on about how good a condition it's in with some pretty photo's, then you get down and really it's a bag of crap. I'd rather be honest. At the end of the day, if someone's after a mint bike, they're not going to settle for any less. Whereas, if someone just wants something cheap or a project and you advertise accordingly, at least you're going to appeal to the correct market.

I would say closer to £500-600

I would agree more with this price, i got a mint Divvy 600 for around £800 and the CB500 can't be much different in price from that

Considering the condition of the bike with all the faults, worn rubbers, 6 month MOT I would say realistically you will get 600 quid for it. It's not a looker either.

This is why I would NEVER buy second hand. There are obvious problems with OPs bike, but there may also be faults that are not obvious until too late. With a new bike you have warranty and you know its history. I reckon OP should just take his bike to a scrap dealer rather than lumber some poor sod with it IMO.

I'd have also said £500 to £600.

Since the new owner will need to spend a good few hundred getting it back to decent condition. £800 - £900 buys you one in much better condition than that but in auction anything can happen.

You must be shit at buying secondhand bikes then. A fool and his money are easily parted. Warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on.

I used to think that way in the past, but it's a false economy.. You pay so much upfront for a new bike compared to used bikes that for a fraction of the money you can have it checked, fixed etc. And used bikes you can sell for pretty much as much as you bought them, while the depreciation rate of new bikes is way too fast to be acceptable for me.
But you're the one with the money, thanks to people like you we get cheap second hand bikes Smile

Question Alright if you've got the cash to buy from new, most of us don't. Plenty of descent 2nd hand bikes out there, just 'know' what you're looking at. Thumbs Up

500 tops. But - if you can clean it up, and you probably can with a bit of graft - you could maybe double that. Depends how many owners as well. Then again 27k isn't much for a CB5, so there's that. Neh - fuck it. Not gonna be a grand, realistically speaking - I don't reckon anyway.

+1, but definitely on the lower side of that as-is.

The speedo on the CB500 is mechanically driven by a speedo cable from the front wheel, so at most a new set of clocks required. At best, a new speedo cable only.

Brand new pair of Hagon rear shocks are £120 odd. A half decent full exhaust system is maybe a couple of hundred at most. The engines always look like that if they've been out in the rain a while Laughing

27K miles is pretty low for this sort of bike.

Cracked rubber on the tyres sounds like new tyres required to me. Maybe £160 a pair?

Yeah, definitely on the lower side (£700 with some patience?), but if there's nothing else wrong with it, i can see far more than the £500 or so others suggest.

NB: Second hand (not rusty/seized) pair of shocks, cheap/part worn tyres, and new speedo cable or 2nd hand clocks (keep the original broken clocks and advert that proves the mileage of the new clocks at the time you bought it!), and can definitely see an easy grand. Particularly if you shine up that engine block.

If you no one else bought second hand, then you'd never buy new unless you're planning on keeping every bike you've ever bought!.

You do realise the bike you part exchanged in at the dealership doesn't just vanish when you pick up the new one???....

Not true...

Warranty is sometimes not worth the paper it's printed on. Only covers wear a tear. Like those nice crash bobbins? How about a new exhaust? Shucks just a little sticker? - all this will equate to voided warranty. They will find any way to get out of a pay out too.

Also, know its history?! Not if it's a stock bike that was built months ago, un registered and left for standing outside until sold.

Sometimes it's not as simple as you think new is. Majority of the time it is but when you get that lemon... Shit!

Thanks for the feed back. I was thinking about £500-600 sounds about right. I've spoken to a mate who might want it as a small project, so I think we can work out a fair price based on what you've noted.
