I just bought some 10mm Neodymium magnets from ebay and have been amazing myself by dropping them down some 15mm Cu water pipe.

Studied all this last year.

It's to do with how a magnet passing near a circuit can cause a current, and also how a current has its own magnetic field, 'because physics said so'.

So when you drop the magnet through the pipe, it pulls the electrons in the copper which causes a current. This current then gets its own magnetic field which opposes the magnetic field of the actual magnet.

So it's like putting two opposing magnets against each other. You get that cool resistance where they repel each other without touching. Hence the magnet is forced to slow down as it goes though the tube.

Thumbs Up Very Happy

The reason the magnet doesn't drift down slowly when it's dropped on the outside of the tube is because the field created is not equal on all sides, unlike when it passes through the centre. So when it gets dropped it is slightly repelled away from being next to the copper tube and the 'magic' doesn't happen. You can see it gets repelled a bit by the way it falls.

We have a demonstration in the museum called "floating in copper" which is very similar, it's quite fun to play with in the morning before the proles arrive.

I took five minutes out of my (not) very busy morning to show you the exhibit I was on about:

The video isn't fantastic quality, but take a look if you like:clicky. With two hands free you can manipulate it a lot easier, you can spin the neodymium magnet and move it around like a tiny shiny UFO Laughing

Does it work as well as in that vid? Might get some magnets myself Smile

Showed that to my family here a couple of years ago. They were all very confused about what was going on Very Happy

I have 5 X 10mm diameter magnets stacked up and they take about 20 seconds to drop through 15mm OD Cu water pipe.

I'm currently training to be an aircraft avionics tech. This experiment is one of the first things you are shown when studying electromagnetism. It's the same principles that make motors and generators work.
