Heated hat tip to trikeschick for the info, Maplin are "end"-of-Winter selling off electrically heated gear including fleece vest (£7), insoles (£4) and gloves (£4).

It's battery powered stuff, using 3xAA cells per unit. The vest has 2 units = 9V though, and 10 minutes of hack-and-tape had them wired in serial into my bike electrics. Surprisingly little scorching of nipples has occurred.

The pads only cover the upper chest, but it's decently cosy just as a vest. Very pleased, slightly moderately at risk of catching on fire. Thumbs Up

Wire in a 12V lighter socket (fused, relayed ideally), and a lighter plug with two wires.

Cut the battery boxes off of the 2 vest packs, leaving you 2 female plugs with 4 wires.

Wire the two female plugs in series, i.e. one after the other. Exclamation For the love of your nipples, don't wire both of the +ve and -ve wires straight into the +ve and -ve from the bike. Exclamation

The +12V red wires in this totully prufeshnul diagram are actually black-and-white in the real world.

Adding a resistor inline is strongly advised. It should be... some... Ohms.

Also, don't do this at all, it's very silly and will likely end in death, best case.

Did buy some.

Any recommendations for suitable waterproof plugs/connectors that I can easily add to each end of the wiring so as to be able to quickly plug in and unplug? I only have spade terminals, which would work (until they rusted anyway) but they're not ideal.

Thanks Roger - getting the gloves before my knackered finger falls off. I'm working at night and suffering badly from the cold.

Any idea what wattage?

A 7809 voltage regulator and two .1uf capacitors will cost about £2 and will give a steady 9v from 12v but is only good for about 1 amp so 12 watts.

I've ordered the gloves and fleece to try out.

Anything designed to run with AA batteries is going to be very low wattage, and wiring it up to the bike isnt going to change that. My mum gave me something similar a few xmass ago (gloves) and they were useless. I returned them and got a nice bodywarmer instead.

Good point although a decent AA battery will do 2.4amps. Given that, and the fact that they are supposed to run for 2 hours, 1 amp output should be about right.

Tried it with the voltage regulator yesterday and it was nice and toasty with another coat over the top.
