Just checked when my MOT is due and it is startlingly soon. So I was wondering if anyone knew some decent, reasonably priced garages in or near Reading. I'm reluctant about MTC because they said a valve clearance and full service would cost £400 once.

MTC is expensive, but they are one of the few places I would trust to do a good job for the money.

You could try talking to mark at Ride in Bike tyres for work on the bike - he does some work on bikes 'on the side' I think. Normally he'd be pretty busy at this time of year, but with the weather people may not be thinking about sticking some sticky rubber on and getting out for a ride!

For MOTs, I usually used Keith Manning; if you get 'Robin' at Finchamstead MOT he's godd - however, another person there told me I needed to replace pads - checked and one set was under 1/8th worn!

Mine always went to MTC; I wouldn't say they are outlandishly expensive, they're just not mates-rates cheap. They did the valve clearances on my Cat as well as general servicing and have always MoTed it. They also MoTed my KDX; at first they wouldn't do it as it has no indicators. I told the guy to re-read the MoT manual for the exemption about off-road use and he happily did it (it still failed mind you on some boring other stuff like head bearings, wheel bearings and the like, but passed on the re-test).

Yea; it should be noted that MTC MOTs do tend to very 'strict'.

I always go to PD Motors in Slough for my MOTs, its further away but I like them and they seem pretty 'realistic' about things.

Haven't used them for actual spannering though, I tend to use whoever is the dealer in the area, so my Suzuki goes to ProBike in Newbury when it needs the frame glueing back together...

Bit worried about this. My exhaust has a ridiculous bandage around it which is obviously not good! I need a stainless one but that's an expense I want to put off as long as possible...

MTC are the only bike-specific garage I've come across in Reading. Are there any in Oxford?

Don't know if you're happy to travel a few miles but Berkshire Bikes in Slough are a good little place to use, not like a main dealer sort of place small and helpful enough generally and they're happy to take on odd bits of work.
Triple S Mot Centre on Belgrave Road also in Slough are a good unfussy place to get an MOT certificate, ride in while you wait service.
Slough's only a fifteen minute ride down the motorway from Reading.

There's a few others.

Avoid Caversham Bridge motorcycles.

The Honda main dealer near Madjeski might be ok.

Keith Manning seems to be ok, but haven't had reports of work (as opposed to MOTs) being done there being good/bad.

I've always gone to bill turners garage, the owner is dead grumpy but always does a 'fair' MOT Smile

0118 947 2647

N & T motorcycles have done work on some of my bikes, always been happy with it. I assume they use Bill turners for MOT's.

Both are in Caversham.

My mate used GP Perfromance to get a KX250 MOTed and on the road; he was very happy with the service he got. They rebuilt my forks with new stanchions many moons ago and were perfectly OK at that.

I actually thought MTC were very fair on the MoT; my KDX was pretty ropey with a patched up exhaust and plenty of bodged fixes, but they passed it once I had outlined the manual to them. The tester did say he had never known about the offroad exemption for indicators before, even though there is an enduro bike parked there every time I go past, with no indies on it....?!

That used to be entirely dependant on how well you knew Craig or Grubby Laughing

Back in the early nineties there was another bloke who's name I can't for the life of me remember on the A329 heading up toward Wokingham that was notorious. If you went while it was raining he'd often just ask if there were any problems and sign off after looking out of the window to make sure you had two wheels Rolling Eyes

Sandhurst Motorcycles aren't a million miles away - they've done my last couple of MOTs and seem fair enough.
