Is it reasonable that I can get conditioned to being able to do 50-60 miles days loaded up with camping gear by the start of july?

I've been riding a bit to set a baseline, and I can do 10 miles in 49 mins or so. About half of that is in town so obviously red lights and such dent the time a bit. I try pretty hard and pant a bit up the hills but I feel fine 15 mins or so after I finish.

That's on my road bike, a old steel framed 80's tourer. I'm building up a 26" wheel bike for the actual tour itself.

No problem at all.

Keep doing 15-20 mile rides twice a week during the week and try upping it to 30-40 once a weekend.

After a month try and do a 30 mile ride on the Saturday and on the sunday.

Repeat until doing about 60 miles on a sat and 40 miles on a Sunday and you will be sorted.

The key thing is getting the miles in your legs, not necessarily how fast you do it. When you tour ideally you will be almost entirely in fat burning territory so you can keep pedalling all day.

On rides above 40 miles, make sure you take some food with you like bananas. Always drink lots of fluid.

Nice one Thumbs Up

That sounds pretty manageable, a few years ago I did 30 miles on an old raleigh 3-speed (3 speeds: hard, harder and hardest Laughing ). Took me 3.5 hrs but I got there!

A few years back my brother did 140 miles in one day fully loaded with touring gear! Shocked Then again he is a pretty full-on cyclist. I still tell people about that now.

I cycled 130 miles in one day on the 2nd March...

There are plenty of nutters about when it comes to cycling. Very Happy

Fortunately there is no special way of getting fit enough, just a case of racking up the miles.

You can say that again! It's quite funny reading on cycling forums, there does seem to be massively varying outlooks. Cycling seems to have many of the same archetypes as motorbikes: weekend warriors, grizzled "ahhh he'll be alright" bodgers, the "better let a qualified professional do the work" crowd etc etc.

The last one always makes me chuckle, I stripped down a frame the other day to the last nut and bolt in about 30 mins. It's pretty simple stuff.

Ermmmm. I sucked at motorcycle maintenance and generally I suck at bicycle maintenance, mainly cause i'm lazy. Just invested in a torque wrench though which is essential for carbon based frames, so have done more than usual!

Well as someone who has built up a GS 500 and a CB500 from quite literally a pile of parts, I'll be somewhat surprised if I get defeated by a push bike!

I put in a cartridge bottom bracket the yesterday. What a wicked invention! No fucking about trying to get bearing shells adjusted just so, you just wind it in and its done!
