I got a phone call from my mum today saying that I'd had a letter through from my bike insurance (Bennetts) saying that my insurance renewal was coming up - and to sit back and relax and didn't have to lift a finger to renew.

Which would be great if I didn't sell the bike and cancel the policy in August of last year.

It seems since then the direct debit changed from "Bennets-ClosePF" to just "Close premium finance".... Hence why I never noticed it; and they kept taking the same amount off me until now.

Now I have a distinct memory of phoning up and cancelling the policy. But even so; I've checked my phone records and there it is, a phone call in the early hours of the morning after I sold my bike, to Bennetts, lasting 7 minutes.

So basically I've been done out of about £160 in the months since.

Are they due an arse kicking here... Or am I missing something?

Thats why you cancel the direct debit aswell, company departments generally never talk to each other.

simples, claim direct debit guarantee, you cancelled the product, they set up a NEW direct debit WITHOUT authorisation from you, the bank will then give you the money back, whilst taking it from the offending company, hope that helps

Yet another reason not to take loans out.

I much prefer to pay my annual premium and know that's the job done until next year rolls in.

I'm confused, you say you cancelled it in august, and your renewal is due now, so you cancelled part way through the police? on a finance deal?

How was it cancelled? Were you asked to pay the remaining premiums you owed them?

Sounds as though they have just taken the monthly payments, instead of a lump sum to clear what you owed them.

It's not like a phone contract - You pay for services rendered. So minus the admin fee - the payments should have stopped there.

I've just got off the phone with them - probably one of the most hilarious calls ever. Short transcript:

Me: Explains situation
Her: Ok lets have a look at your records; ok you never contacted us
Me: I have it here in my phonebill that I did on x date at x time for x amount of time.
Her: We have no record of you contacting us since the policy began.
Me: So why have I called you and spoke to you for 7 minutes the day after I sold my bike?
Her: Ok you say you have the bill in front of you - what number did you call?
Me: 0800 107 7990
Her: ....The number you have given me isn't one of ours
Me: It's the one I'm calling you on right now...
Her: You said the number is 0800 107 7990? Its not ours
Me: Well its listed in giant bold numbers right at the top of your website.
Her: Oh... Right I need to trace whats going on here can I call you back?

Still awaiting hilarious call back

Yes, the payments should have stopped, but didn't you think it was funny how you weren't asked to pay a lump sum to cover the loan you took out to pay the insurance?

I haven't looked at the terms, I'm also with Bennetts, but I'm sure by 6 months through the policy, you will owe them around 80 or 90% of the policy amount, minus the premiums you have already paid, plus an admin fee for cancelling from Bennetts and / or close premium finance

You can't just cancel an not expect to not have to pay extra.

The policy was paid in full to Bennetts with a loan from close premium finance, the monthly amount you pay goes towards repaying this, loan, when you cancel part way through the policy, you are still liable for a large portion of this loan, plus any admin fees set out on your terms, this should be worked out and you'll be asked to pay xxx.

Even by having paid the monthly amount up until now, you could still be liable to further charges, depending on what Bennetts / cpf charge for cancelling.

It would probably be in your favour to just let the policy run until renewal, collect the NCB and move on. Bennetts don't send renewal notices until a couple of weeks from renewal, so the policy must be nearly over anyway.

Of course I expect to have to pay to cancel the insurance.

However its a bit alarming that they were ready to go ahead and renew my policy just like that Shocked A policy that I had cancelled.

Was the change of the direct debit done at the same time?
That would suggest further evidence that 'something' was done.

At the end of August it still came through as "BENNETTS-CLOSE PF"
Which I seem to remember the guy told me at the time it would because of the time it took to cancel with the finance provider.

However, next month it switched to just "CLOSE PREMIUM FIN".

So your right G - Something went on.

Even if I did have to pay the rest of the policy (which I highly doubt) - I really don't expect:

A) My policy to still be valid
B) My "automatic renewal" to come through
C) Them to have no record of me contacting them, ever.

Your own fault mate.
Never leave it to someone else.

If you don't have the vehicle and can prove you informed them then I suppose they'll reimburse. I have no problems with Bennetts as they are competitive and 'normally' competant too.

Good luck.

And why did you sell the bike ya phannie? Rolling Eyes Very Happy

Oh good luck with Close Premium Finance, might as well be called Scum Premium Finance, I wouldn't piss on Close Premium Finance if Close Premium Finance was on fire.

The first thing I ever do when I take out a policy is ask who their finance company is, if they say Close Premium Finance I put the phone down, they fuck everything up and then tell you it's your fault, and then decide to charge you for the privilege.

If you have to fight with Close Premium Finance, and you probably will because Close Premium Finance are twats of the highest order, do the following
"Hello, how can I help you?"
"Can I speak to your supervisor please" repeatill you get supervisor, and then ask to speak to their supervisor and go from there, they don't deserve to live, might as well be called Sammy finance

Dial Direct are far worse...

All i wanted to do was change my bike on the policy...

It took 5 WEEKS of phone calls to sort out, as they kept changing things on my policy to attempt to bump the premium up so that they didnt have to give me money back, including adding convictions to my policy...

Meant i had to piss around trying to prove i only had 3 points, sp30, instead of the random crap that they had made up and stuck on there!

Oh and to top it off... someone ( in their words) 'pressed the wrong button' and cancelled my policy... i only knew about it 2 weeks later when i got a letter through the door. They even CHARGED me £25 admin fee to cancel the policy...
