What's the legal minimum age for a passenger?

I've asked about and have been advised that it's 12, or if their feet touch the ground when on the seat. Or even, there's no age minimum as long as they're wearing proper protective gear.

If anybody knows the proper regulation, please let me know, I'd be very grateful. Thumbs Up

That's from the MAG website.

Sounds like you need one of these.

Yup - as other people have said, as long as they can touch the footpegs it's fine.

On modern sportsbikes this means that someone who is about 4 could go pillion.

I used to reguarly go pillion when I was 10.

Thanks for this Dainesefreak. Thumbs Up My lad's coming on 10 this year, so maybe a bit small for him. I've taken him up and down our drive, so I doubt holding on is going to be a problem. I was just worried about breaking the law.

Thanks also to everyone else for your input. Appreciated. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

In the official Theory Test official publication from DSA, Q14.24:

Q. You should only carry a child as a pillion when:
A. they can reach the handholds and footrests.

Any passenger you carry must be able to reach footrests and handholds properly to remain safe on your machine.

I had this question in my Theory test!

Hope it helps!

Thanks 30sumthin gal. That looks like it's as official as I'm going to get. It's still quite extraordinary though that they've not stated an official age limit. Even if they could reach the footrests, some bumps can be quite severe even for the rider! Nevermind for a 6 year old! who just about manages to reach the footrests. Oh well. C'est la vie.

There is no minimum age, all the regulations state is that any passenger must be capable of sitting astride the machine with both feet on the footrests and must wear a securely fastened safety helmet.

Legally they can even face backwards if they want to!

Thanks for letting us know, it really contributed to the thread.

And as TC said no minimum age as long as they can reach the pegs properly.
Although would you really trust someone under 12 to hold on properly or obey all your rules like no moving about etc?

That's where you are wrong. Pillions have to be facing the correct way.

Nope - they can face backwards.

Ever watched the London Marathon? For events like that is the main reason why you can face backwards.

I'm not too sure about that TC. In preparation for my test we had to list 7 things that you must ensure a pillion passenger must follow and one of the most bizarre ones was the 'facing the right way' one.

Mind you, still, it doesn't mean it's illegal though so you may still be right. Thumbs Up

Apologies, TC is right, I'm wrong. Just checked. The pillion just has to be astride the machine on a securely fixed seat.

TC doesn't stand for Traffic Cop does it?

As far as I know TC stands for Tony Carter and I may be wrong but I think he used to be a motorcycle copper.

It means you don't want to get involved in a drinking game called 'rimmer' when I'm playing.

Others will answer this question slightly differently methinks. Laughing
