I'm a commuter doing around 200miles a week. Will be my first big bike (A2 license), narrowed down my options to these two bikes and i have a few worries about each one. Personally i love the CRF250M, as i love supermoto's but it is to slow?
Another thing that worries me as that i will fall and i don't mind falling off if i'm honest, i just hate having to pay out to repair bikes (same as everybody else) so this is what also nudges me towards the CRF because if i fall off i could just pick it back up again and ride off unlike on a CBR where i'd have broken fairings that'll cost a lot to replace. The CBR is also a lot heaver weighing at like 192kg has 47bhp and tops out at around 115mph, where as my little CBF125 only weighed around 120kg topping out at 65 and has like 11bhp. (Very very very bored of the power, i full throttle it everywhere and it hardly moves lol)

Do u think i'll get bored of a CRF250M (150kg/ 22bhp /80mph top speed)?

Is the CBR500r to big of a step from a little CBF125?

Which one do u think is best first 'big bike'?

Which bike do u think is best for me?

Not a clue, but there’s these things called 'Test Rides'. They are quite awesome. Thumbs Up

Go sit on each of them, go around the block on them, see how you feel after a twist of the throttle Wink

They're 2 different bike that I suppose you'd ride differently. On a sumo, would you want to go much more than 80mph with no fairings? The CBR you could do the 115 and be much better protected from the wind etc. etc. Do you want a super fast bike? (not that either of them are slow)

Also I get the impression sumos require more frequent maintenance than others? May be wrong with that though

If you dont want to be paranoid about it still being where you left it, every time you leave it.... 500.
It's the tool for the job any way.
As for falling off..... DONT.
No reason you should, is there?
If you do think there's a high liklihood of falling off... think whether biking is for you really. certainly 200 mile a week commuting!
Take it easy, know your limits. Keep your wits, should be FINE!
Buying a big-bore lightweight, as first 'big-bike' isn't really big biking, is it?

Nah, that'll be fine. It's a commuter-in-a-frock, not an "R" bike. They practically designed it for you.

The CBR is ideal for that sort of a commute. You can pootle along at 80 and feel like your doing 40 (because of the fairing).
Dont fall off, there is absolutely no need- ride to the conditions and your experience Thumbs Up .

Folk will take some time to reset their heads. 35kW is significantly more than the old 25kW limit, it's enough for any legal real world use, plus a bit of fun. The new CB500 gives you 75mpg+ or 100mph+, ABS and heated grips as standard for under £5K. What's not to like?

If you're in the market for a new bike, I can't see the point in paying £1000+ more to get a bike that will need restricted down anyway.

The CBR is a good commuter bike..great MPG (mine got 84mpg on its first fill and should get better) and they do look nice. Dont let fairings put you off, if youre that paranoid about dropping it then get some frame sliders...but as Tef said, theres no reason why you should.

One thing I would say though is that if you are intending on keeping this bike a while I would go for the CBR500R... only because after a while you may find the 250 not enough for you. Ive had mine a month and if im honest, I already feel like id like something a bit 'more'. Im on a restricted licence for another 16 month so no matter what bike I get it wont be above 33bhp so im sticking with the 250 for now. ..its a good bike to learn the craft of riding on. It has definitely improved my skill as a rider and by the time my restriction is up I should hopefully be a safer rider on my 600 or 1000cc bike, rather than someone jumping from 125 to 1000.

So yeah. ..go for the 500 if money is no object.....the 500 is about £1400 more expensive I think...but will probably hold its value better than the 250.

Just my 2 penneth anyway.
