I'm aware that bikes take a hell of a lot more hammering that cars do in the engine dept. What is a "high" mileage for a standard 4 stroke, 500, something like a GS500? Assuming lady luck is with me next week I'll be looking for a 2nd hand bike, prolly GS500 and I was wondering what kind of mileage is too high?

Is there anything to look out for with these bikes?

What about age of bike?

Cheers for the help.

It is not the mileage that is important but how it has been looked after that is key.

A high mileage bike that has achieved those miles in a fairly short period of time may be more reliable than a low milage bike over a longer period of time simply because the high user will probably have been regularly serviced and put right as things wore out regardless of cost, whereas a low miler may have sat in the garage for two years and not turned a wheel so everything is seized.

So, don't be put off my high miles, make sure that it has a service history, and that everything is in its place, even speak to the previous owner (if its had more than one), just be prepared to pay a lower price and therefore sell it for a lower price later on.

Bike engines are built to last. I know it is bigger capacity, but I sold my original CBR1000FK at 139,000 miles (which I had from new) and I saw it in a dealers the other week having gone around the clock another 3 times and it is still on its original engine.

As I say service history and owner history along with all bills are the important factor.

one way l noticed if a bike had been sitting un-used was to look in the fuel tank for rust because rust is usually caused by water settling at the bottom of the fuel and rusting the steel, my 1989 VFR has fuck all rust in the tank due to it being daily used by pervious owner for many years, but a AF1 1990 l had the tank was seriously rusted inside because it had been sitting for 2 years. also fork seals harden and leak when not used

A GS500 would approx last about 60,000 Miles before anything would needed to be done to the engine, but negelect servicing and it would be more like 30,000 Miles.
