Hi,

Went out to start the bike today (18 month old Honda CBR650F) and it wouldn't go. Video attached, but basically something was spinning away but wasn't engaging the engine. Had to get to work so ended up bump starting it and rode in 10 miles. Got to work, switched off and then tried to start again - fired up first time. Came out end of day and fired up again. What could this be? Is it a gremlin that has been fixed now or should I be visiting Honda for a warranty replacement of something?

Thanks in advance.

It's still under warranty so I'd get the dealer to give it a health check. Remind them you need it for work, it's your livelihood etc etc

Is the 18 month old bike new to you?
If so are you twisting the throttle on start up?
If not then as said it`s a warranty job.

I'll be in touch with Honda tomorrow, but was just wondering what the potential diagnosis is? Largely because I would like to continue to use the bike to commute on whilst I wait the inevitable 2 - 3 weeks for the next available appointment. I'd rather not have it picked up in a van and be on the train for February. The bike is new new, so 18 months and under the two year warranty, so I would hope they would sort it free of charge.

So the response from Honda so far is that it must be the battery. They have declined to look at the video though as yet. I will probably take a ride over there in the next week and show it to them. The guy I was speaking to said that my commute isn't long enough to charge the battery and so it is probably dying. I ride a round trip of 1h20 or so 5 days a week with extra use for fun over the weekend. I would have thought that is plenty to give the battery charge? Anyway, from that video the battery is clearly working just fine. I can book it in with them to look at but there is no guarantee anything will be covered under warranty apparently.

I get the distinct impression that getting Honda to do anything about this is going to involve a lot of my time.

Response from Honda ???????
Is there a Honda dealer nearby?
It`s under warranty and clearly the battery is a cracker turning that engine over briskly.

A few minutes of riding is enough to charge the battery following a start. 1H20 would charge it from flat several times.

BTW your starter IS spinning the engine, I don't know where you get the idea it isn't. It's just not firing up.

I don't know, my technical knowledge is limited. What I would say is when normal, it sounds like it is cranking - you hear a definite cranking sound. This is just a whining. They are two very very different sounds. The sound as per the video just seems like something has become disengaged and is just spinning around without doing anything. I will be taking a ride over there on Wednesday to show them the video.
