at the moment we have a skoda fabia on an 04 plate

getting a bit old and the wife wants somthing new

she has to travel ten miles on the motorway twice a day so i think diesel would be better but not essental

three cars we are looking at today are

kia rio 1.5 crdi 40000 miles on a 09 plate

honda jazz 1.3 petrol on an 08 plate (cant get diesal ones)

nissan note 1.5 diesal 2009 not sure of milage

she wants somthing big enough to fit the luggaga in when we go away but still cheapish to tax

she will pay up to 140 a year but prefers cheaper is poss

has about 6 grand plus our fabia to spend

would prefer 4 door and manual is a must

any other suggestions

100 miles a week, 5000 miles a year, prime example of where a diesel would be pointless. You'd need to a lot more mileage than that for the economy of a diesel to outweigh the more expensive purchase price and servicing/repair costs.

thats just the motorway bit she does 13000 miles a year

add another 12 miles a day to that just for work alone plus weekend running about

also she can be sent to any store in the area to train new staff so can somtime be upto 50 miles away

Unsure if that warrants a diesel, get a small petrol.

Something like a Jazz would be silly, seem to drink fuel.

If I was looking to do mass miles, some eco bollocks Polo or a very small 1.4d Mazda 2

Flog the Fabia, buy a 2k Jag at £190 or whatever it is a year to tax a pre 2001 car, then spend the rest on fuel saving the £6k for something better.

I bought a Nissan Almera 2.2di.. It has very good mpg, has plenty of power, and very comfortable to drive. Plus it still only a medium sized car.

Kia, Nooooooo!

Well, unless they have improved a whole lot. The 2 friends I know who have had them regretted it. They were rubbish.

Can't see why an 04 Fabia doesn't do the job, kids today Laughing

Renault Grand modus 1.5 dCi
Renault Megane 1.5 dCi
Vauxhall Astra SXI, 1.4 petrol / 1.7diesel
Volvo c30 1.6D
Hyundai i30 1.4 petrol / 1.6 crdi
VW Polo 1.4 Bluemotion
Peugeot 207 1.4 / 1.6 Hdi
Citroen c4 1.6 Hdi

Could get any of those 2009+ with reasonable mileage for under 6k, personally I would go a little older and get a nice bm/merc/saab or even a nice alfa brera Drooling

Lots of choice for that brief/budget the list could go on but they are all fairly similar.

well the kia was a waste of time

like the car but the model we looked at was a bag of shite

scratches all over it and had only done 42 000 miles looked a lot older

the nissan was ok but the garage didnt seem to want to talk to us about it and were trying to force a fiesta on us even though we said the boot was too small

and the jazz had sold so we went to a honda dealer that had loads but were all too expencive

An 04 Fabia will be as good or better than any of those choices. But you'll get a lot better value looking at something a bit bigger. Or, if you're not too fussed on branding and want something smaller, 6k + yours should get you into a brand new sandero with a decent bit of spec

How old was the Fiesta? New one I thought was fairly roomy - seen it quoted as 10% smaller than an oldder Focus, or a C3? Both have versions that are listed at 65-67mpg for diesel and £20-£30 a year tax.
All the cars you are looking at would be considered 'supermini' class, so aren't going to have a massive amount of space.
However, they do seem to be pretty roomy compared to similar cars from days of old - be it better design or just physically bigger.

Edit - seems the older note was considered a 'mini-MPV', versus the newer one being considered a supermini.

My wife has a 12 plate Fiesta. Took 4 people and luggage for a week away no problem - a bit of space management is needed though.

She got the 1.25 Zetec 82 ps. Seems capable. Tax bands are wierd though - I think the 1.6 is in a lower bracket?

Can you explain to me how PCP works. I've asked it before and I'm totally confused by it.

I bought 2 suzuki swifts, 2k down on each, 130 a month for 4 years, at the end i pay 3.5k each to buy them. You can do that or px against another new one, so the finance gets paid off, know what, i'll do this when im not pissed.
