OMG!
That snippet of Schwantz fish-tailing on the brakes... "Wait till you see godd, then back off!" along-side Super-Smooth Rainey!
Not sure about, was it Mat Ox's, comment about the pair hating each other's gut's though..... some of the comments each have made in thier bio's suggests a 'heated rivalry between respecting peers'... But I suppose this is TV they have got to ham it up for the camera.

But yeah... that was a Halceon Era....

Only photo I have ever taken and had enlarged & framed, was of Kevin Schwantz at the 1990 British GP at Donnington!

God, he was the wildest of the wild! And boy were they WILD!

Have to keep an eye open for the show.

Or they toned it down for their bio's, now that they're friends. I think the most significant thing is that after Rainey's accident and his win in 1993, Schwantz spent the next season crashing out, and then quit.

Maybe he was like Rossi, and he needed a target to give his best. But unlike Rossi, only one target would do.

I remember reading Mat Oxley's description of trying the NSR500. The steering damper was so strong he could barely move the bars, and when he asked the mechanics to back it off a notch, instant high-frequency tankslappers. He also said the power delivery was like a rottweiler tearing into a group of bunny rabbits.

I'll be watching it, if I remember. Please bump!

and there-in lies the clue I think....
Rainey was mounted on a Yamaha.
Schwantz's 'zook was reported to be down on power to the Hondas and down on handling to the Yam, and would have been running at the back with Randy on the out-paced Cagiva (ironically related to the Suzuki, via the Gallini Suzuki team who developed the Carbon Fibre frame for the Suziki V4, around a pair of protatype cases, that aparently Cagiva took a very close interest in when they started building the C-F Cagiva V4!)... were it not for Schwantz's 'genius'.
When Yamaha released the blue-prints and offered the TZ-V engine to privateers via Harris and was it Goulouse?
Mat the Ox's protege... oh Sean... Sean..... EMMET! Knew I;d get there! (or was it his brother... what was his name?!?!? & Does it really matter!) Anyway... the press review of the Harris claimed that the bike was not just close to the Factory Yams, it was a 'clone' and the engine, basically Rainey's motor from the year before, and they commented on how 'tame' the bike seemed...
It was an era of greats, and I dont think you can put a fag-paper between them for skill, stupidity and shear balls...
Schwantz' lac of success, was as Rainey said a 'pitty', but Rainey's success was just such a real harmony of man and machine and TYRES, which I think was the aknowledged ingredient at the time, all coming together.... Shwantz suzuki just didn;t do the same for him! I think its recounted that he had three frames in one season at one point, trying to get the thing to work for him!
But, my real hero of the era remains Gardner.... First saw the little Ozzy at Donnington, Easter Cup Races... oooh... what would it be? 84ish? Barry Sheene was there in Super-Bikes, and... the contravercial chop-crank pre-RC30 VF750... & I can t remember who was riding it....
But we were up on the esses, when the 250's camne round, and that blind drop; you could tell the Donington 'Ace's all peeling in on a line through a corner before they could see the actual tarmac, and the 'forreigners' all coning in wide and shifting line....
Then this utter idiot came charging down the outside from the middle of the pack, wondering what every-one was braking for, then suddenly lifting the tail, on the brakes when he saw the corner, slamming the bike down, getting a big wriggly as it stepped out of line, correcting it, then picking it up changine line, deciding that still wasn't it, and picking a new one... he was ALL OVER THE PLACE! Incredible to watch, and just bizare he was passing people working his way up front and NOT coming off!
Then we saw him on Grand-Stand in that famouse footage that went into the credit-sequence, doling his bucking bronco ride at what 140+! Incredible rider, in an incredible era! They all were.
