Hi, I have a suzuki VL125, I went out to the shed today to clean it up to get back on the road, when I connected the battery up to start it, there was no power, the battery had been inside over winter to keep it charged and read just over 12v on my ohm meter, when it was connected up and the key turned that reading dropped to 0.11. a friend said it might have something to do with the regulator rectifier, I know what it looks like, but don't where to find it. Does anyone have any ideas that could aid me with this problem?

Thanks in advance

The battery has been getting topped up all winter, it was fully charged, but when I connect it back up to the bike and turn the key, nothing, no lights, no horn, the digital trip meter wont even turn on. I have no idea what is wrong, I checked the fuse box beside the battery and the fuses are still fine, the look brand new still.

the problem is your battery is flucked. it should be reading closer to 13v, should not drop any voltage really with just the lights turned on, and I wouldn't even expect it to drop below 12v on the starter unless it was getting flat. replace bettery > start bike > profit.

the reg/reg your friend has mentioned is to do with the bikes charging system and regulates and recifies the generator voltage stopping spikes, and turning the ac into 12v DC that can charge the battery, since the bike has been laid up and has not been running. this will not be your issue.

A healthy battery should read closer to 13 volts when fully charged. The fact that the voltage dropped when you pushed the starter points at a battery problem - if there was a serious electrical problem then you wouldn't see any change when you pressed the starter. We can assume that the electrics work.

If the battery is a traditional type with a semi transparent casing, make sure the water level is up to the mark. You may need to clean the casing and shine a torch at it to get a good reading. If any cells are low, top it up with distilled water then leave it on a charger for a few hours.

If the battery is a sealed type (opaque casing) then it could just be knackered. If it is over 5 years old then this is quite likely, and the solution is to replace.

See if you can jump start it off a car battery. No need to run the car, the battery will be quite hefty enough to spin it over. It is possible that the starter has seized up a bit if it was standing for a few months, but this is fairly unlikely.
