Worked for triumph and infinity motorcycles for 5 years

Why are you asking?

not a fat lot, just look at the likes of george white's, motorcycle city, carnell etc etc, they all sold shed loads of bikes at discount prices but still couldn't make a go of it.

There's not much money in it at all these days, hence so many dealerships going to the wall. I can remember in the 80s when there were bike shops everywhere. It was quite common for a town to have a dealers for each of the big four, plus maybe a scooter shop and somewhere selling Euro exotica (Ducatis, Laverdas, Moto Guzzis, erm...MZs...CZs...Jawas Laughing ).

I remember a guy who owned two shops telling me he barely made £500 on a new Blackbird a few years ago. They rely on punters buying leathers, lid, boots, other extras, and getting servicing and parts sorted there later. The internet has done major damage to the trade. Now we can go on ebay and get stuff at prices the shops just can't compete with.

It's what I thought actually. I reckoned about £500. The reason is a friend is buying a new Yam for 6k, they offered £200 off because it was a 2012. Now it seems its actually a 2011. I think they should knock more off and was wondering what margin they work to to give him a better idea of what he can push for.

I think potential discount would depend on whether he's buying it outright for cash or not. I always thought shops would look favourably on readies but no, they do better when bikes are bought on finance, apparently.

I would say £400 off for this bike being effectively two years old (though unused) is more like it. But I guess there will be other variables from the dealer's point of view as to whether he can afford to knock that much off.

There's two ways of looking at it.

#1 Dealers are really struggling at the moment and if we don't support them today, they won't be there tomorrow.

#2 They're having a laugh trying to peddle a bike that nobody's looked at in two years for what's essentially full price.

You don't "push for a deal", you find a cheaper bike elsewhere, tell them straight up that you're going to buy it unless they persuade you to take that sad piece of abandoned metal that's taking up space in their shop, and walk towards the door with every intention of doing that.

If they want to actually shift the bike, you won't get to the door. If they don't, you get a cheaper bike elsewhere.

I'd be wanting a good chunk off - two years old and you're already losing a chunk on resale value, whatever the plate.

By the way, I assume that's a Divvy? I can see loads of 2012 models on eBay, including one with under 1000 miles asking £4295, finance available.

It occurs to me that's less than the OTR price of one of those Chinese "WK 650s".

I just can't figure out why anyone is buying new bikes.

I do , and its not a lot aiming for 5%, but on some brands you sell at cost and hope to get money for manufacture for hitting target.

Nice used bike aim £500 roughly , I know most of you look at the trade value in which is lots less then the retail but prep cost money in a main dealer and you have to buy a used warranty from the manufacturer and prep it to showroom standard.
