Hey I am doing an assignment about motorbikes and being safe on a motorbike, one of my questions is about the gear you can pick to wear.
So my question is what do people prefer to wear?
Q.1 Bottoms
A) Jeans
B) Leather bottoms
C) Kevlar bottoms
D) Other (please specify)

Q.2 Helmets
A)Full Face
B)Full Face Lift
C)Moto-Cross (Off road) Helmet
D)Half Helmet
E)Open face (3/4)
F)Other (please specify)

Shoes

B)Biking shoes
C)Trainers
D)Flip flops
E)Other (please specify)

If you could make your answers quite simple e.g. "Q1-A" etc, etc.

Thank you everyone in advance! Very Happy

What, your tutor/teacher actually set this topic?
andyboy359 wrote:

If not? Well, you are off to a bad start..... "Oh.... MOTORBIKES! He's picked his hobby.... oh, no not another one..... well, lets see what he has to say about his pet passion....."
Rather than "Recycling" or similar politically correct bit of indoctrination that will get the tutor's blood up....
"Ooooh! this could be interesting.... he's showing a social concience! So what has he learned.... I'm all ears!"

Tip: Read between the lines, and like when a woman says "Do what the fuck you like!" Know that that is NOT what she means... what she means is "Do what will please ME! I dare you!"

But, OK... lets do your home-work for you..... you know that putting polls up on forums is a very bad way to earn marks too, dont you?

If you want to impress them, go find some obscure guru on the topic who has had umpety papers published in accademic journals, and qote them mercilessly.... doesn't really MATTER whether you quote them in any useful way, or whether what they have to say has any relevence in teh real world.... its showing 'Accademic Reasoning' and 'diligent accademic Research'.... mention an interweb 'source' and rather than picturing you digging deep into a dusty old library late at night, they picture you doing something on a smart phone between pints in the SU bar......

Where were we?

andyboy359 wrote:

Trying to help you claw back a few marks.... state the fucking obviouse.... teachers frequently lack imagination, or they wouldn't be teachers.

Safety Wear - does NOT make you SAFE.....

Not CRASHING is what makes you 'safe'!

You can have the best safety wear in the world... and its all utterly redundant.... up till the moment you CRASH.

Don't crash... don't need it!

Then.... if/when you crash.... well, its all a bit of a lottery still. None of it is a Marvel Comic Invulnerability suit. You fall off.... you gonna get hurt.... only question is HOW MUCH?

And 'Safety Wear'... can only limit how much you get hurt, not stop it.... and even then, only between certain limits.

Fall over at walking pace and bump your bonce on a kerb... your crash hat might only absorb as much impact energy that a thick wooly cap might if you walked into a low door lintle! All the ratings in the world.... impact is so mild, only a fraction of its potential is used.

Face plant a mack truck doing 60... well.... you are going to be toast, aren't you? Or at least the Brown Bread before its stuck in the oven.

Safety Gear dont make you safe. Riding defensively, makes you safe. Hazard Awareness makes you safe. Machine control and evasive action makes you safe...... GEAR? limits hurt.... some-times.

On a race track? Leathers. They have lots of good abrasion resistance for a long high-speed slide down grippy delugrip. Not so much use on the rad, where something is likely to bring you to a sudden halt before you have slid very far.

In Off-Road Competition; well, we call them jeans... but they are more like lightweight breathable jogging trousers, with big pads of soft foam in them. Not likely to slide very far. But hard packed earth or rocks hurts. But I compete in classic class... I tend to wear real 501's or a pair of Levi Chino's, if it's hot. Lurid Trials-Jeans dont seem to go with an old-bike.

Road? Depends on the weather. Water-Proof's mainly in this country! Under them? Well, most often my regular street-wear. Whatever I wore to the office (when I went to the office), or jeans.
Frequently these days, as I am usually only popping accross town, or to the local shop, or just testing a bike I have fixed or adjusted.... soft joggers under a pair of mechanics overalls.

Though, few weeks ago.... and it has gone down in family legend.... Donna got herself 'stuck' between ridges of re-frozen snow either side of the pavement off the drive, and I had to go rescue her..... and ride the bike off the drive, then down the road to turn round and being it back up for her.....

I was in a dressing gown ans slippers at 4 in the morning.... in the dark.... in the fucking SNOW.

So the answer on that occassion was 'Nothing'...... my eldest, and I joked whether a passing coppa would have done me for not wearing acrash-helmet of indecent exposure...... all I can say is......

Bare bollox against freezing cold petrol tank is NOT a pleasant experience!

Race Track? Full-Face.
Road. Full-Face, Flip or Open.... depends where I am going, what mood I am in.
Trials? Depends what they make me wear. Regs didn't demand one until about 1995. Then we were allowed to wear puch-bike hats if we wanted. Now has to be a Trials beanie or open-face, for contemprary competition; but Classic classes have exemptions, and unless I have to I wont bother with one.

Why dont you have a check-box for 'None'... See above comment on half naked night ride!

And What the heck is a half helmet?

Track? Gearne Race boots
Trials? Gearne Trials boots!
Road? Whatever is on my feet! See above comment on half naked night ride! Most commonly, boating pumps, or cow-boy-boots.

Not a hope.

And what's happened to jackets? or one-piece, or over-suits? Or wax-cotton?

How do you cope with the bare bollox on freezing petrol tank issue?
I thought that If I was going to do it more, perhaps a tank pad cut from one of those radiator backing pads covered with a bit of felt.... I could have a felt bollox pad Wink

Depends on the weather.

Winter. Full textiles with gloves, under gloves, boots, balaclava, etc.

Summer. If there weren't so many cops around I wouldn't even wear my lid!

Also as Mike says, gear doesn't make you safe. If anything it gives people false confidence that if they stack it, they'll be fine because they're wearing their gear.

My answers don't fit with your poll. Here they are anyway:

All gear depends on why I'm riding and what the weather is.

Just going for a ride, if the weather is ok I'll wear leather jacket and trousers. Cold/raining - textiles.

If I'm riding to get somewhere, recently it's been textiles over regular clothes. If it's hot or there's nowhere to leave gear, jeans instead of the textile trousers. If there's somewhere to get changed and the weather is alright, leathers.

Prefer the leathers in terms of fit, safety and general awesomeness, but the textiles are convenient, waterproof and warm, although they look a bit lame.

Usually wear motorbike boots, but sometimes just regular leather boots if I have to walk a lot the other end.

Always full helmet.

Because, they cant be arsed, or they would get thier info from a propper published and reputable source rather than quickly pop a post up on Chat-Forum from thier smart 'phone between free-periods...
And it would spoil ALL the fun for us to take the piss, whilst NOT doing thier home-work for them!

We asked 100 bikers what they wore on the road.... and our top answer WAS:- skin.
